Minister for Education and Culture Myron Walwyn has announced that the government’s manifesto plans for the fostering of a performing arts sector in the territory has not been forgotten.
Speaking at the FTM Top 7 @7 Music Awards Show press conference on February 8, Walwyn said at the end of his government’s term he would hope to have in hand the plans for the building of the Virgin Islands performing arts centre.
He said government has a desire to support the arts and that over the next four years they would be working to facilitate more opportunities to recognise local talents and in a sense give local artistes a larger stage to perform.
“We also recognise that it is important to have education and the facilities to support the arts. We will be looking at the arts in the public schools and how to improve access to technology and training,” he added.
Walwyn said Virgin Islanders have always been singing a song, strumming an instrument and mixing a beat and now he says that Virgin Islanders have reached to the stage where they have gained international recognition such as Iyaz and Kamau Georges, who traveled to the 54th Grammy Awards for his work on one of Lady Gaga’s album which has been nominated. The minister also mentioned Melanie Amarro, who Walwyn termed as the VI’s very own.
The National Democratic Party manifesto made mention of the government’s plans for the developing of the performing arts sector and stated that at some point the administration would be commencing work towards the establishment of a National Centre for the Performing Arts.

Just why are you people getting the bowels over what the Minister said? at the end of the day, NOTHING will happen. Before Tilford was boothed out of office, he fixed things so that the UK will determine our future. Thirty million dollar contract for the Hospital all signed up but no work can get off the ground unless the UK says so. Mark with his piss about West End Harbour project and car parks, all to create an impression.
When the folks from the UK arrive next week they will have a few questions to ask concerning the absence of any serious cost cutting measures and our willingness to hire consultants with no qualification.
Just see the other news about the NPT loss of $700k on that stupid concert – it was an obvious loser from the start. So how you gonna get an Arts centre to make money?
Why are some ministers jumping from pillar to posts, trying to get and stay in the news. The territory has financial challenges and does not have the money to do all the things that need to be done. As such when every thing cannot be funded. Government normally prioritized expenditure based on needs.
The current urgent needs are health, education, air transport, roads, water, sewerage, job creation, electricity, rising crime, cost of living adjustment…etc. The wants are also important but they should consider behind needs. First things first. Lets do some proper planning and management and let the outcome speak for itself. Lots of activitivities and spouting a bunch of platitudes do equate to success.
The man simply said that by 2015 they should at least have a ‘PLAN’ in place. This could mean refurbishing the cultural centre. The HLSCC Auditorium was an ill-conceived and poorly planned project! It should’ve been constructed to seat at least 2,000 people with partitions used to section off when smaller crowds would attend functions.
Nobody can have a major function like a queen show, awards show, concert etc as there’s not enough space. The place barely hold 500 people and when it’s maxed out it’s very uncomfortable.
So, nobody is wasting money. The man said they will haev at least a ‘plan’. LOL!! People are really ridiculous around here.
Rebuliding the cultural center to a Arts building will be very good for the country but we have so much things to worry about before that. Our education system from pre-primary straight through HLSCC need to be increase, Government need to find a way to invite more business to the country because our population has exceed the number of jobs in the country by the way I LOVE that government has decrease the price on incomming food I hope that store owners will revise there prices and lower them because if they don’t FRANCHISING will be the next move to help feed the country.
UTILISE AND REFURBISH THE SIR RUPERT BIERCLIFF HALL. Make the flat seating area in the hall arched at an angle so everyone can see the stage. Our government started running the bull-wagon well, however if you guys ride the wagon wrong you may fall right off.
THERE IS AN URGENT NEED FOR A GOVERNMENT HIGH SCHOOL FIRST. THEN ANYTHING ESLE COULD FALL IN PLACE.
I think they should break down and rebuild the raggedy, leaky, hot Cultural Center and make this the Performing Arts Center. Someone said the Cultural Center is “perfectly good”. If that’s perfectly good, I won’t like to see what your idea of bad is buddy. Can’t please nobody.
I would love if iyaz and amaro would contribute some monies to this performing arts centre. we’re always giving to the yout but they rarely give back.
There is a perfectly good building next to the Sports Complex that has been around for decades….the Cultural Center! yes it leaks and waters comes up from the ground, due to poor infrastructural buildings but my golly, why not use what you DO have vs building and making more buildings we do not need. Use your local talents you have yes by giving them the contracts to refurbish and replenish the current Center you do have and make it into the fine Arts structure it beckons to be! You not only create jobs that way, you circulate the much needed funding this BVI needs. yes you do need to promote the talents but not lets squander the monies we DO NOT have on silly projects that the government creates every meeting they have. Please do not make the same mistakes as the government before you did..you see how easily the tides do change with one simple vote!!!!!!!
thank u sir. well said. My opinion is that we complete the hospital project and clear some debts before undertaking anymore such infrastructural projects. this project is totally not necessary
just to say he did something???
idiot. no one is saying theyre not doing good. point is, its a waste of money. we cant finish hospital but we planing arts centre? a small country like bvi need a performing arts centre? are u kidding me? we claimed to have needed a multipurpose sports complex, and we hardly now use it and its mainly been used for basketball and pageants. smh
WASTE WASTE WASTE WASTE. when will these bullheads learn?
FOR WAT ALYO … LIKE WASTE MONEY SAH WAT THE DAMN COMPLEX AND COMMUNITY CENTERS THERE FOR STYLE STRUPES………Walwyn UR IDEAS SALTY SLOW UR ROLL AND STOP WASTING MONEY ON NOT NEEDED THINGS
HE is not wasting money, you need to stop being so ignorant,,,,,, Here in the BVI we have alot of talent that needs to get out, some of our youths and older foks have alot of hidden talent that can really put the BVI on the MAP.Its not wasting but investing in the BVI once he does go and open that PERFORMING ARTS CENTER that CAN and WILl bring in LOTS of Tourists and more income for our country. Tourists like to be ENTERTAINED and see different and amazing talents. And we might never know most of the times we have big Records dealer and movie producers coming in here to the BVAI, looking for new and differents things..
And in the end when all things come good, the country will have enough money to put back in for what was invested(for the PERFORMING ARTS CENTER) and to pay your ignorant, money hungry self.
What’S the use of the HLSCC auditorium? so the stage is too small? when we hold youth events there, there is so many seats left unoccupied, yet we wanna build a performing arts centre which will be seldom used. sheesh
we have HLSCC yet we’re using the sports complex which was poorly built, when we couldve torn down the culture centre and merge the infrastructre with that of a sports complex and performing arts centre into one project.
is it a black man’s thought to build 20 buildings for the same activity unlike the white who build one gigantic structure for 20 activities?
a people without vision will perish
NOW TELL ME EXPAT THOUGHTS U SEE THE DAMMMMMM HLSCC AUDITORIUM COULD HOLD ANY BODYYYYY????????????????????????????? U JUST TALKING BECAUSE U HAVE A MOUTH..WELL GUESS WHAT HERE IS A THOUGHT U SHOULD DO… SHUT THE … UPPPPP…
youre a momo more than me. the auditorium? where it have so much empty seats when u host events?
what about the cultural centre with all that space? why govt refuse to invest in refurbishing it? gees….
dont be too hard on him. remember this idea is not necessarily his. walwyn is doing good so far dont be too hard on him
