Myron Walwyn, National Democratic Party (NDP) at-large candidate, assured an audience at a recent big tent meeting in Huntum’s Ghut that his party will seek to protect consumers.
Walwyn said the BVI needs Consumer Protection Legislation and a functional department of consumer affairs in this country.
“We need someone to look out for the people of this country. A proper functioning department of consumer affairs would ensure that supermarkets are not jacking up their prices so that they can make a bigger profit to the detriment of the consumers and the country. How do you know that when you go to the gas station to put in $20 worth of gas that you are actually getting your $20 worth? These simple things can have a major effect on the economy of a country and we have to address them,” Walwyn said.
He added that an NDP government will ensure that consumer legislation is in place when it takes office.
Walwyn also said he is concerned about the high cost of electricity in this country.
“The fuel variation charge represents some 45% of the electricity bill, so if your bill is $200 then $90.00 of that will be fuel variation. Where are we to find the money from? Where will we get money from to pay the electricity corporation?” he asked.
The NDP at-large candidate said the BVI needs a comprehensive energy policy in place right now as what is being done in the Cayman Islands.
“We must come to the realization that if we do not deal with energy issues, it will affect our development and the success of our economy and our society. We need to take a serious look at alternative energy and the cost savings it can have for both consumers and the electricity corporation. With a shift in Government’s policy to allow consumers to utilize solar panels on their roofs, for example, individuals will have the capacity to supply their own energy and even sell the excess they have to the corporation,” said Walwyn.

The cheapest cell phone and internet service is from CCT the local carrier. Ocean Conversion is cheaper than biwater when you include electricity!!! Fraser said Biwater doing this and that for ‘free’ well if our light bills are so high lately with fuel variation, how much you think we will be paying BVIEC for biwater bill including all fluctuations in fuel cost?
It will be passed on to us the consumer by way of our water bills, don’t be fooled by loyalist and others! They say NDP was for foriegn interests but now we can see WHO FOR WHO now!!
