Calling it a “menace to the country” and a “major health hazard”, newly sworn-in Minister for Communications and Works Mark Vanterpool said tackling the sewerage problem is one of his main priorities as he enters his new office.
Speaking to BVI News on Thursday, Vanterpool said all sewerage contracts signed by the previous government will be halted and reviewed.
“It’s a menace to the country… It’s a major health issue. We can’t afford that and we want to tackle that very quickly,” Vanterpool said.
He noted that the East End/Long Look sewerage contract, which was started recently, will be halted and reviewed as a matter of urgent priority.
Vanterpool also noted that he has instructed the Public Works Department director to “halt all major projects that are under the Ministry of Communications and Works until I can take a review of them”.
The new minister promised that the reviews will be “very quick”.
“Not that we are going to change anything. However we would like to see what the contracts were for and probably make adjustments if necessary,” he said.
Vanterpool, also the representative for the fourth district, pointed out that he does not intend to offend anyone but it’s customary that any new government will review existing contracts.
Vanterpool said his other colleagues will do the same as they take over their new ministries.

OK. So they stopped the biwater contract and now we don’t have water in the purcell area….
I know the Minister is now responsible for all works but since he has not yet step foot in office I think it would be good of him to let the Premier speak for now. When the HOA officially installs everyone then gracefully roll out your plans.
There is wisdom in patience and thoroughness don’t try to please the people by making premature statements.
BVI Investors Club is back in power.
Poor fool.
Ignorance is bliss.
Please do it quickly and please, please let’s get some proper sewage pipes put in. I’m tired of walking through crap and breathing in the horrible stench. What century is this?
Yes, Mark I know you are capable!
I am waiting to see the posts of imbeciles jumping at what he did.. I can hear them now “You see You see or kids gonna be paying”. Not realizing that this is standard protocol for any new government that takes power. That almost all new governments halt projects until a thorough review of the contracts and the confines and
modus operandi under which the signee can operate is fully known along with any potential ramifications in the future that could pose a problem in the future. Furthermore contracts need to be examined to see if any bribery/unethical practices took place in the negotiaions and signings as those are reasons to terminate them legally..
Ok. I will be your 1st idiot. I live on Hawks Nest road, which is the alternate road to get to the airport. The VIP party had that road ready for paving. It was grated, rolled, and ready to go. The NDP came into party and shut down all projects. That road sat for 4 years with nothing being done. Now VIP had just started up that road last month and cement is being poured. Now it will be shut down again. You can’t even drive towards the prison any longer because the road has completely washed out. So here we go again…..it will sit for another 4 years!! And this is the alternate path to the airport. What happens when they start digging up East End for the sewage project?!?! You can’t get to the airport anymore if they don’t fix that road.
they can always come over the hill that comes into Parham town and pops back over where the Lewis’s live to come out by the bridge, they dont need to go all the way round past the prison. So please come again.
that all depends on how the road in east end is dug up. they may not be able to get to parham town
Your own statement eludes to your own level of idiocy “Now VIP had just started up that road last month”. So for their entire time VIP never addressed it either, until they were looking votes….
THANK YOU! I was wondering if they had realize that! Stupes
at least it was getting done. now it won’t happpen at all.
You sound so stupid. Every government knows it has to halt projects to review. 4 years ago Frazer didn’t just halt project as min. Of comm & works. He threatened to bulldozer down the Queeen Elizibeth park fencing. You forget that already? Why do u think he started so many projects a month before elections? 2reasons. 1 to buy your vote & 2 to give u something to blame on the new government. He knew that the VIP lost the election months before polling day. It is called strategy. Has any body stopped to ask where the money was coming from to pay all those last minute contractors signed for by a government who claimed the country was broke due to the recession? Think for yourselves people.
Come on those guys are not vindictive nor as stupid as your vip cronies.
fair enough!!!!! Mark I respect that, like any responsible sane government would do….
I wid ayo…I’m not saying take all the contracts from cavin, just make sure we aint getting a 6 for a 9 somewhere…
The saga has already started with the supporters.
Here we go again.
