Opposition member and First District representative Andrew Fahie believes there should be a penalty for persons who had misled the House of Assembly with respect to the initial arguments about the implementation of a night court system.
Fahie’s comments were made to the Standing Finance Committee and representatives of the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions.
The Director of Public Prosecutions Wayne Rajbansie told the committee that since his assumption of office in August 2012 he reviewed the night court system for traffic offences and saw it fit to cease it with immediate effect as it was not economically viable which manifested in nonpayment of staff among other things.
He noted that an observation of the operation of the night court sessions shows where it costs the government in excess of  $4000 per session.
The DPP pointed out that payments to persons in the night court were made up to November 2011.
He made specific reference to the following:
-  The amount owed to attorneys in the DPP’s office is $6,175.
- Â The amount owed by the government to other members of staff of the Office of the DPP was $2,600 up to November 29, 2012.
- Two members of staff were overpaid the sum of  $3250.
The DPP told the committee that from these statistics, he would submit to the committee that the fines generated by the traffic matters, could never commensurate with what is being paid out to staff under the night court system.
