To the Government of the British Virgin Islands

I am writing to BVINews.com as I do not know which department in the government to plead to.  As a concerned citizen, I am pleading with the government to install a No Wake Zone between Marina Cay and Great Camanoe.

I am asking the government to be proactive in this before someone is killed in that area.  Daily, we have sailboaters moored at Marina Cay that swim over to the dive site on Great Camanoe. The Breakaway from the USVI moors there on a daily basis bring many tourists to our waters.

The Scrub Island ferry boats go full speed through that area on an hourly basis without regard to potential swimmers in the area.  Additionally, their wake has caused damage to boats docked at both Great Camanoe and Marina Cay.

Again, please, please, install a No Wake Zone in that area before someone gets injured or killed.  (Additionally, you might want to talk directly to the Scrub Island ferry boat capatins and tell them to just slow the heck down!).

    @Scrub Island Marina:
    Scrub island responded in a very timely manner. Now we will watch daily if they actually practice what they promise. The writer is correct that it is an accident waiting to happen. No one wants to see anyone get hurt or killed. What is the rush anyway?

    A Thoroughfare would still not resolve the matter of the wake and damage to boats and docks in the area. If boaters want to go fast they are best served by going around Scrub

    Easy to say no to a “No Wake Zone” as long as you are the boater and not the victim of the wake. I am sure that you will be singing a different tune if someone you know is hit by a speeding boat

    People who moor their boats near channels always want “no wake zones”. People who have to drive through those channels to get somewhere prefer not to have to drive their boats at a crawl for half a mile.

    The Government has enough problem with real crimes before it starts worrying about policing “no wake zones” in areas of open water. Keep “no wake zones” restricted to marinas, and trust boaters to use their good sense otherwise.

    A NO WAKE ZONE IS ALSO NEEDED IN SOPERS HOLE. THE EAST END OF LITTLE THATCH TO FRENCHMANS AND TO STEELE POINT. THE FERRY BOATS PLOW INTO SOPERS LEAVING A 1 METRE WAKES THAT ROCK THE WHOLE HARBOUR DAMAGING BOATS AND THE SHORELINE. I HATE TO SEE WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN THE NEW FERRY TERMINAL IS BUILT FURTHER INTO THE HARBOUR

    A channel around the eastern end of Marina Cay would solve the problem. Make the area between Marina Cay off limits as a thoroughfare.

    Why would someone reply that they dislike the above comment relating who the concerned citizen can contact to get a no-wake zone in motion for the area? Would you rather people’s property be damaged and risk the lives of swimmers so a boat can speed through the area??? Some people are so selfish it’s sickening!!!!!!!

    THANK YOU to the poster for bringing this to our attention. We, at Scrub Island, always appreciate comments and feedback. This provides us with information we use to constantly improve what we do, and how we do it.

    Scrub Island has a policy of “No Wake” through Marina Cay’s mooring field as well as anywhere else there are boats, docks or swimmers nearby. Scrub Island’s policy requires constant regard for swimmers and the property of others.

    We appreciate this opportunity to reminds ourselves and our staff, some of whom are very new, that being a luxury resort and providing the highest level of customer experience extends beyond the shores of our island and well out into the community and amongst our neighbors.

    We’ll be very vigilant of the speed, and proximity to others, with which we operate our vessels and this poster along with all our neighbors in the Scrub Island, Great Camanoe, Marina Cay and Trellis Bay areas should notice it immediately.

    Again, our sincere THANKS for bringing this to our attention and allowing us to revisit our policies and procedures and insure they are properly followed at all times.

    Please feel free to contact me directly at any time with comments and suggestions.
