Teachers from schools throughout the Virgin Islands gathered for capacity building sessions designed to equip them with skills in Autism Intervention. The sessions which were facilitated with the Ministry of Health and Social Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, were held from June 1 to June 12 and conducted by Kingwood Trust officials, Autism Intervention specialists out of the United Kingdom. Topics covered during the sessions included use of the autism assessment tool Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS); and the Psycho Educational Profile (PEP3), designed to evaluate students’ educational needs and provide initial intervention. This entire group suffers autism!
I will say this again since the message was not received. The picture above shows a selected group of people who have already had some training with special education. Only 2 of the teachers were from Eslyn Henley and 2 from Techinical one of whom is the Guidance COUNSELLOR of both schools. The Education Psychologist, Speech Therapist and Special Education Officer were included along with teachers from other primary schools including someone representing Virgin Gorda and a pre-school. This specialist team will receiving continuous training and they will in turn train teachers from the other schools.
Anyone with common sense knows that for any training to be effective the smaller the group the better. At other sessions teachers were present from all primary schools public and some private as well as principals. Pre-school teachers were also present. Before negatively knocking down everything recognize that it is a small step in the right direction. Give it a chance to work before being critical.
Ever wonder it can very well be the vaccinations causing these illnesses? But noone ever questions anything especially our government!
You obviously know nothing about autism so should shut up. If you did you would know that is has been proven that vaccinations is not a cause. It has been questioned and researched. The persons who have been charged with gathering information are very much up to date. It is just the legislation that needs to be put in place and enforced.
your so f’in ignorant group member!!!
Lmfao!!! Your so ignorant!!!
i wounder out of the large number of children with Autism and other mix disabilities, how many of them attend Eslyn Henley Center, wh they keep putting the majority of the TRAINED SPECIAL ED TEACHERS there? There are far more childrem scattered in the school across the BVI with such issues than the entire population of the EHC. Where is the vision, planning, analysis that is in place, I surel dont see it from what is happening so far. A handful of SP Needs kids getting full benifit while the majority just struggling through the regular school system. Is anybod taking notes?
yeah ms.tysonn!!!! my old teacher thanks a whole lot
we as parents wif special needs knows wat it feels like the begging we hve to go thru and the song we always hear is (ill look into it) there r kids in the primary school wif special needs who r now 13 and 14 who hve never been evaluated and dats a fact..wats nex for my son/daughter? sum parents r leaving the island wif thier kids to reallocate to places where they dont hv to beg but the government takes care of the child wif special needs and their parents why cant it happen here…………..cuming frm a parent who hv been begging fr yrs and to all the parent wif kids wif special need . its the law for our childen wif kids to be taken care of…….
well said. I am one of those parents like yourself. They like to be infront the cameras taking pics and running them mouth making nothing but noise and when it come time for them to help us help our children is one set of SB after the other or no response from them at all. It is sickening and overbearing now. Lord Jesus, please take control manifest yourself in the situation, better yet manifest your healing powers in the lives of our children so that you can be glorified and man would not take the credit for the progress of our children when it comes. Amen
Up FIYA!!!
Unless the photo shown is a file photograph, the teachers in this pic are only from the special ed school and the technical school. It is definitely not a representation of schools (public or private) throughout the system. If this is the case, it is unfortunate because daycare and pre-school teachers are key to the success of the learning of children on spectrum, and they are the ones who need information on how to work with these kids. I hope our very flawed education system can improve. Is there only one person throughout the BVI who is qualified to be the Education Officer for Special Needs? I think not. This is such a growing problem that Myron and Mrs. Potter need to think about a special and equipped department for special needs alone. There are some parents with autistic and other issues who are more qualified than alot of teachers because they live it. Anyway, whatever they do, I hope they are serious and they don’t fall down and drop the program by the wayside. Just my thought, and you may not all agree with me. Nuff respect though
Very observant. I thought is me only realise that. Them ppl is joke. 7 teachers were sent to train for Sp ed in the BVI and 3 of the 7 are at Esleyn Henly and the other 4 are in class rooms through the territory teaching regular children. Wow! Is there training being put to good use. What happen to all the sp ed cildren scattered throughout the island not benefitting from their training. And now this just add to the insult. why dont thy just put all the children with Special needs who are scattered in the islands public schools in Eslyn Henley centre
It should’ve been mandatory that EVERY primary school, daycare and early learning center (public or private) send at least one teacher who would then report back to the rest of their respective teaching staff. That group definitely does not represent one from each. Well done for all the teachers that did attend. My daughter attends St George’s and unfortunately I don’t see a rep. from them in the picture which would’ve been helpful since she has high functioning autism.
Before you make comments you should be informed of the facts. That group of persons represent the intervention team that has been established to help train the teachers. At prior meetings teachers and principals from each school were in attendance. Know the facts before you become lawyer, judge and jury.
who step on your sore foot? People only know what they read. You were there, the rest of the readers were not. Give the news an accurate article and we’ll know what the deal is. Sorry people like you like can’t take no kind of criticism that why the place is how it is.
My problem is not with not being able to take criticism but with people opening their mouth before being informed of the facts. We all know the system is not perfect and instead of applauding them for taking a small step in the right direction you all are quick to judge. That is the real reason the place is like it is. Big mouth people airing their mouth before checking what is really going on.
