UPDATE: Corrine Brewley – the BVI's Cultural Doll of the Caribbean

BVI News Staff - Thursday, April 19th, 2012 at 9:34 AM

BVI News Exclusive Photographer Andre ‘Shadow’ Dawson was at the Lionel Roberts Stadium in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas on Wednesday night to witness our own Corrine Brewley participate in the  Virgin Islands Carnival Committee Cultrual Night. Brewley appeared as one of five cultural dolls of the Caribbean. Dominica, Dominican Republic, St. Lucia and US Virgin Islands were the other participating countries in the cultural dolls presentation.

ABOUT THE COSTUME

The costume is St. Ursula the Coat of arms of our territory, which is found on our Territory’s flag and is also referred to as Vigilate which means be watchful.   The beautiful costume being presented by Ms. Corrine Brewley is based on this legend. Legend has it St. Ursula was a British Romano Princess who was on a pilgrimage with 11,000 virgin handmaids when she was killed by German Huns.

When Christopher Columbus was on his second voyage he discovered the Territory of the Virgin islands, he named them the Virgin Islands as they were so many Islands and small cays it was impossible for him to count them all and he named the area in honour of St. Ursula and her 11,000 virgin handmaids.  Some of the names of the islands such as Virgin Gorda ( fat virgin) and Anegada (flat virgin) were all named by Columbus based on this legend.

Ms. Brewley is wearing a full length  princess style gown, the bodice is trimmed in gold and tapers down to shimmering layers of new gold and green which are the national colours for the Territory of the Virgin islands.  The gown is adorned with a beautiful cape, as she extends the cape to display a shimmering bright green  background decorated with ten lamps same to the one she holds in her hand each lamp represents 1, 000 virgin handmaids.  As she turns around to reveal the back of her royal cape you can now see the other half of our Territory’s flag the Union jack the flag of our mother country the United Kingdom.  The Union jack is decorated with red, blue and white sequins.

The cape is adjourned with gold trimming, and to top if off Ms. Brewley wears a gold crown this signifies St. Ursula’s royal status.

This magnificent costume was designed by Ms. Tiffany R. Scatliffe and made by Ms. Hilda and decorated byMr. Dean “Ghost” Smith and Mr. Leon “Kazak” Jefffers. Ms. Brewley wishes to thank, the Min of Education and Culture, Department of Culture, Ms. Kristen Fraser, and to the VI Carnival Committee and the people of St. Thomas for inviting us to take part in the 60th anniversary Carnival celebration.

of course you would have seen it before it is the accpeted cultural costume of the Territory as it is St. Ursula and most cultural costumes should refelct the flag. Obviously you do not know much
