The preliminary inquiry into the attempted murder case against Wakima Lettsome continued in the Magistrate’s Court today, February 2.

It was announced that the virtual complainant Jonathan Colaire was going to complete his account of the incident, and it was also hoped that the investigating officer in the matter would also give testimony.

It is alleged that on November 18 after 10 p.m.  the virtual complainant (Colaire) was in Crabbe Lot in conversation with another man when he heard a loud outburst of someone cursing. He looked and recognised the defendant who he knows as ‘Tall Boy’. It was stated that at that time the defendant was wearing a white shirt. The defendant allegedly began threatening the VC, who he accused of ‘dissing’ him.  The defendant threatened to slap the VC, but Colaire walked away and was pursued by the defendant.

The defendant ran out of the Crabbe Lot area, while the VC stayed. Lettsome later returned to the Crabbe Lot area dressed in dark clothing. From a few feet away Lettsome allegedly, with what appeared to be a firearm, shot Colaire who reportedly saw a flash and felt pain in his stomach. The defendant, after shooting the VC, is reported to have said: “Take that in your mother s**.”

Colaire allegedly ran away and collapsed next to an apartment building. He was assisted by friends and taken to Peebles Hospital.  The VC allegedly sustained a single gunshot to the side of the abdomen.

Colaire reportedly underwent surgery at the hospital and was detained as his condition was deemed to be serious.

The Crown had objected to bail on three grounds, namely the seriousness of the matter and the fact that the VC was still hospitalised. The second ground is the belief of the Crown that the defendant might abscond given that he was arrested on Jost Van Dyke which was stated to be in close proximity to the USVI.  The Crown also objected to bail because it is believed that the incident was an unprovoked attack.

It was also stated that a search was carried out of the defendant’s home and vehicle that resulted in clothing being seized for forensic investigations.
