The Public Information and Education (PIE) sub-committee of the National Disaster Management Council (NDMC) is informing the public of the potential mass gathering hazards, particularly during the festival season when overcrowding is likely to occur.
Speaking with the Department of Information and Public Relations, member of the committee Linton Leonard emphasised the need for persons to be aware of mass gathering hazards, saying: “There will be lots of activities during the festival season that are sure to attract large crowds.”
“PIE has identified this time to educate persons of the potential hazards associated with large gatherings and is reminding them to be prepared in case of an emergency.”
Leonard also shared some mass gathering safety tips, he said: “It is quite easy to forget about your safety when attending a mass gathering. Persons should become familiar with their surroundings, observe and take note of all exits, be watchful of any potential threats like fights and monitor children very closely, to minimise the potential for danger.”
Messages focussed on mass gathering and overcrowding will be aired during ZBVI’s Morning Almanac from July 21 to 22.
Next Tuesday’s GIS Radio Report programme will feature interviews also addressing the topic.
The Department of Disaster Management’s Focus Show will air later this month on July 27 on CBN Channel 51 at 9pm, July 28 on JTV Channel 55 at 6pm and July 29 on HLSCC Channel 52 at 7pm.
The National Disaster Management Council (NDMC) is chaired by Governor Boyd McCleary and coordinates disaster preparedness and response readiness activities.
The NDMC’s Public Information and Education sub-committee promotes public awareness of hazards and disasters, among other responsibilities.
