Mohamed Kamara, the man implicated in a credit card fraud matter, was sentenced today, February 27 to four months in prison for attaining services by deception and was ordered by Magistrate Tamia Richards to pay the monies lost by Nanny Cay Resort forthwith or spend an additional four months in prison.
Kamara, a national of Sierra Leone and a resident of Trinidad and Tobago, was arrested and charged last year October for obtaining services by deception and possession or use of proceeds of criminal conduct.
On February 22, he apologised to the court and promised to never “do it again” after his matter was changed to a summary offense and the Crown offered no evidence on the charge of possession or use of proceeds of criminal conduct.
Principal Crown Counsel Tiffany Scatliffe, in presenting the facts to the court, said on October 20 a report was made to police by the hospitality manager of Nanny Cay resort that Kamara had checked in and paid for a room and other services with someone else credit card.
Officers from the Financial Investigating Unit are said to have gone to Nanny Cay and talked with the manager who said that someone called and identified themselves as Steven Johnson, saying he wished to pay for a room for his friend Mohammed Kamara to stay at Nanny Cay for one week.
The court heard that Nanny Cay emailed Johnson and sent him an authorization form which was signed giving Nanny Cay permission to take $1,064.17 from his card. Upon investigations the officers of the RVIPF attained a telephone number for Johnson in the United States and called him. According to Scatliffe, Johnson was not even aware of where the BVI was or the Nanny Cay Resort, neither did he know a Mohammed Kamara.
Following the phone call the officers returned to Nanny Cay and went to Kamara’s room where they were invited in by the defendant who told them that the room was paid for by his cousin in Africa. Kamara also invited officers to search his room telling them that he had nothing to hide.
It was stated that there was a computer on the bed in plain view and on it officers found the resort authorization form in the name of Johnson. The computer also had details about Steven Johnson, such as his social security number, his billing information and home and business address, along with other personal details. Kamara was cautioned and arrested on suspicion of credit card fraud to which he told the officers: “Officer I do not have a clue of what you are talking about.”
He was interviewed at the Road Town Police Station, and during the interview, he told officers that his cousin in Africa, who owed him a big favour, sent him on the trip. During the interview, Kamara’s phone kept ringing constantly and a detective answered it and on the other end there was a man saying: “Whose name you purchase the ticket in? I am at the airport now.”
The person called back and the officer allowed Kamara to speak to the individual and he said: “I am arrested by police. I don’t know what you are talking about and hung up the phone.”
When asked by police who the caller was Kamara identified the individual as Daniel from Trinidad. An inspector did a brief examination of Kamara’s laptop and found names, credit card information, birth dates, and social security information for hundreds of US residents. The computer was sent to the United Kingdom for analysis.
The police also found a text conversation on one of Kamara’s cellphone between the defendant and the Daniel person confirming two first class tickets to Jamaica from Trinidad for the same day.
In his mitigation today, the court was urged to take into consideration that the defendant has been in custody since October and to consider his time spent on remand and the fact that he intends to reimburse Nanny Cay for the $1,064.17 that they had to pay back to Mr. Johnson. It was also noted that Kamara was nabbed on the first day that he checked in.

I think we need to stop fulling up balsum ghut with expatraites. When they commit a crime send them on the next flight out. They up there eating our tax money and living life good. When them in jail who is benefiting from this? Come on people get them out when they break the laws
it is bad enough when people can ‘think’ that level of crap. It is far worse when the editor fo a paper sees it fit to print it on an Online news site where there is no limit to readership.
People out there must be think some of you are savages still stuck in the stone age. Very sad state of affairs though.
I disappointed in the magistrate.
Frr little cannabis charges you throw the book at ppl, time plus fine. Cannibis is a crime that affects no one.
But fraud, identity theft financial terrorism & they get a slap on the wrist.
This sends a terrible message to these dispictable criminals.
She can only give what the law outline. yes it is a serious destructive crime but most likely the penal part of the law needs to be changed.
This man need a long jail time.He was caught that is why he was unable to continue his fraud career. If he does not get a custodial sentence he is likely to continue his wicked ways in another country making a mess of hard working people lives.Send him the right message your honor.

wow! what is this world coming to? What a doc I am so in agreement with your comment.People why cant we live as one and stop hating each other we are one Caribbean.I travel to a lot of other countries and I don’t hear all these crap that I am hearing in my own little Island.
obviously you dont travel much. I have spent time in Trini, Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua, St.kitts and especially in the bigger islands they tease you about coming from small island and your accent. They do discriminate. Its just that we dont know about it much because Tortolians do not travel too much the other islands except going on cruise or one of thier family members from another down island. Thats why you dont know about the discrimination but it exist in a very big way.
You are absolutely wrong and i have travelled all the islands including Guyana… Nationals of Jamaica, Guyana, and Santo Domingo get harsh treatment in other Caribbean islands.
How do the bajans treat the Jamaicans and Guyanese?
How do the people in Dominica treat the Santo’s?
How do the people in SKN treat the Guyanese, Jamaicans and Santo’s?
Etc….
So be careful when you make blanket statements

Does FIU and FSC do the same jobs within government?
FIU mean Financial Investigations Unit which is a UNIT within the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force while the FCS is a totally diffrent organisation of Govt.

Dont you think, in this life we are, there is more to life than what meets the eye. As GOD has given humanity that second chance to live, why cant we just share that among ourselves? Maybe we should stop being selfish. And consider with one another. Who among us knows how hard the fella’s past was?
