There is a zero tolerance policy for perpetrators who commit sexual acts especially on minors in the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.

The Territory’s top cop, Reynell Fraser, emphasized this point at a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon at the police headquarters.

He was responding to the question of the alarming sexual-related offences being heard in the High Court and Magistrate’s Courts.

“The perpetrators are in court because the police are taking assertive actions. I take zero tolerance when it comes to sexual assault, common assault and sexual incidents pertaining to minors. We are seeing some increase in those areas, and where I am concerned and I have been driving that to my officers – no tolerance for that. We have to take action against perpetrators of such crimes,” Commissioner Fraser said.

Additionally, theft and domestic violence are also on the rise this year, Fraser told reporters.

“We are trying to put a stop to that and impose a no tolerance to these issues. By that I simply mean we will take assertive actions against that of course we still have to be guided by the Director of Public Prosecution’s Office,” he explained.

Top on the list of items constantly reported stolen to police are iPods, cell phones and laptops since in many instances they are left in clear view, Commissioner Fraser explained. He opined the responsibility is left on the shoulders of persons to protect their property, but noted the police force will continue to sensitize the public through campaigns.

Commissioner Fraser advice: “Make sure you conceal these items or take it with them when they are leaving the vehicle.”

Meanwhile, the crimes statistics for 2009/2010 will be made public shortly.
