Communications and Works Minister Hon. Julian Fraser will join Premier Hon. Ralph O’Neal this week with talks with Air Safety Support International (ASSI) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on matters relating to the BVI.

Fraser, before leaving the territory on Sunday, said the extent of his trip is to be with the Premier in London to meet with the Under Secretary of State of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to discuss matters pertaining to the BVI and its development.

The Minister said everyone knows there has been a terrible economic downturn worldwide and the effect on the BVI is no different from the rest of the world.

“What we as leaders must do is to make sure that even though you know about it, whatever impact, it is reduced significantly,” Fraser said. “We cannot stay here in the BVI and expect you the people to prosper unless we do something about it.”

The Minister, who is also representative for the Third District, was speaking at an appreciation dinner organized by members of his district.

The Minister has been under a lot of fire over the past months for first installing traffic lights at the round-a-bout in Road Town and lately the signing of a water contract with the foreign company BiWater over the local company Ocean Conversion.

Fraser told the large crowd that the government for the last several months has been working and has succeeded in passing the budget for 2010 and thereafter went back into the labour code which was passed a few weeks ago.

The Communications Minister said that now these matters are out of the way, the government can concentrate on other matters including having discussions with the UK government on the territory’s arrangement with the UK government on the purpose of borrowing monies. “We are not in jeopardy of being able to borrow money at this particular time but we have to look forward, we cannot wait until that moment arrive then start doing something about it so we are forward-thinking and we will be moving forward in that direction,” Fraser said.

The Minister was in Barbados on Monday holding discussions with officials of the Caribbean Aviation, Security and Support, Systems, talking about aviation. From Barbados, the Minister will be in London on Wednesday to hold talks with officials of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and later on Wednesday afternoon will return to the Department of Transportation to discuss aviation matters and on Thursday the Communications and Works Minister will hold meetings with ASSI.

I am still at a loss as to why Tilford took Fraser and The Cookie Monster to london in preferance to taking Aunty Dancia who can talk a hold in a frying pan, One has to assume that leaving Fraser and the Brown Bommer behind could have resulted in an explosion as one of the two would have had to be appointed to act as Premier. Fraser as Premier? The Brown Bommer as Premier? that would have been war. The other question is what contribution can Fraser make other than to display his arrogance. I am certain that they will be read the riot act and told to go back home and smell the coffee.
