Friday, July 13 – Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark Vanterpool and Executive Director of Tortola Port Partners, Mr. Hugh Darley held a follow-up meeting with taxi-operators to present a scheme for an efficient way of transporting cruise tourists to and from the port.
The meeting held on Tuesday July 10 was based on the Transportation Staging System for the Cruise Pier Development Project and was a follow-up to a previous meeting held on Wednesday, June 27 to introduce the “Tortola Pier Park” plans to the public.
A number of issues were discussed including the various routes cruise guests will take; where guests will be picked up and dropped off and options for a system on how taxi operators will receive guests; independent travellers and prearranged tours.
“Tonight, what you will see is a plan that we put in place to manage 8,000 people. We want to get people in and out of the port more efficiently and develop a more systematic way of picking up the guests and dropping them off. We want things to be organized. We don’t want nine people yelling at passengers as to where they could or should go. Guests will walk up to a counter and be given information approved by you, in this room, at a tour desk. Then a dispatcher on the curb will manage who goes where.” said Mr. Darley, “This is the idea we put forward, but it is subject to change. We’re listening.”
Minister Vanterpool added, “We will try to make it better. The reason we put this project out to the public, giving every chance for discussion is because we want to hear your views before we zero-in on the final plans. We will be open to those ideas and we will try to make it better. We want to get this moving… We believe in this project… We believe that the economy of the BVI is heavily dependent on its growth and success.”
The Cruise Pierre development proposal has been in existence since 2005. This initiative is part of Government’s plan to increase the marketability of the Territory.

Mark stop wasting your time on these taxi men. They make millions off this industry but contribute nothing. Tell them go take a damn seat they are sickening now. Never have any ideas of their own but always pulling down whenever one is presented. A set of backwards old men looking to continue making easy money off tourism, what do they contribute apart from their rude, ignorant behaviour and nasty driving?
kmark’s and lambert beach resort went sour under this guy…doc better give him a check up
we dont want it…period
Fortunately you don’t get to make the decisions.
It is a darm good thing that the decision is not Mark’s to make or we would be up a creek with out a paddle.
