BVI Red Cross Administrator Denese Gardner-Daniels says that it is imperative that as many men take advantage of the health fair and prostate cancer screening that is heading to Virgin Gorda on Saturday, February 4 from 8am – 3pm at the Catholic Community Centre.

Gardener announced that some 758 men were screened at the Tortola leg of the fair on January 27-28.

Gardner-Daniels said no screenings were held in 2011 because of the lateness of the 2010 fair. She said the screenings are usually held in either January or February annually but for various reasons it was held in September of 2010 and therefore a January screening didn’t seem feasible.

In 2010, a total of 992 men were screened and it was mentioned that there were some diagnoses made.

While it was mentioned that some men skipped this year, Gardner-Daniels noted there was no drop in attendance because there were many new attendees.

It is pure ignorance why some of these men won’t get screened. No excuse, if they don’t want to go to this they can always go to a private doctor.

The guys that are getting checked are the smart ones. They realize thier health not only affects them but thier families.

The BVI Red Cross needs to be commended on these prostate screenings across the territory.

As many of you may know already, prostate cancer is prevalent among black men, and typically by the time it’s discovered, the disease had already spread. Thus prostate screening & and early detection is essential in fighting this potential deadly disease.

Of all the cancers that afflict mankind, prostate cancer is one of those that can be effectively treated if caught early. Most of us men by the time we reach old age will have some degree of prostate cancer of an enlarged prostate gland. The good news is that in a large percentage of cases, we die of something else, but unfortunately for some, their prostate cancer can be aggressive and spread causing significant illness.

Now, some men may be thinking, I don’t want the doctor to put his/her finger in my anus, but so that you know, doctors see a lot of anuses every day, and there is nothing special about them. So don’t let your pride or some irrational fears get in the way of getting screen. Furthermore, the digital rectal exam is quite often substituted by a blood test called the PSA test (Prostatic Specific Antigen), so unless you have an abnormal blood test, it’s unlikely that with today’s medicine, the doc will perform the digital rectal exam initially.

Finally, let me say kudos to all those 758 men who have been screened thus far. Wise move. All men 50 or over or even younger in some cases should jump at this opportunity. It may just save your life from a disease that you do not necessarily have to die of.
As an incentive to get screen, just remember a healthy prostate will always keep things hopping in the bedroom. Trust me.

Late update – total of 1005 men screened on TLA and VG – well done guys! Some in their 50s had not been before as “scared” but good on the wives/girlfriends for persuading them to come!
