Territorial At-large Representative Archibald Christian has said government intends to proceed with the Purcell Ghut project.
Speaking at a Fifth District meeting on Wednesday evening, Christian said he visited the Purcell Ghut project with Communications and Works Minister Mark Vanterpool to get an idea from the engineers regarding the status of the project.
“Many of you know that it looks to us as if that present arrangement is not going to work but because of financial constraints as has been indicated by the premier and the education minister, we will have to proceed with the project in order to safeguard the residents of that part of the Sixth District and ensure that the public is safe, but going forward we have put the project back into Public Works Department,” Christian said.
Christian said it was strange that the project was in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour.
“Roads and bridges and structures normally come under the Ministry of Communications and Works so its back in the Ministry of Communications and Works, and Public Works is now again in the driver’s seat, spearheading the best way forward in terms of ensuring that the residents of the Sixth District/ Purcell Johnson Ghut don’t continue to faced the hardships with respect to the ongoing flooding that takes place when we have very heavy rains,” Christian said.
Meanwhile, Communications and Works Minister, Mark Vanterpool, said the Purcell Ghut Project has been suspended.
“We are doing some work to re-open the road in the next week or two in time for Christmas, and once that is done, Public Works Department has been commissioned to give a final project they are going to recommend. We have seen some preliminary works from them, and early in the new year they will gave us their final proposals and then we will review that and look at the budgetary situation and continue the project and finish it properly. Its’ going to be different than what was there,” Vanterpool said.

archie, it was placed in the hands of natural resources and labour because of the imcompitence of pwd….you’re green to politics….it wont take you too long to find out about pwd…you’ll see, mark my words
You may have a point regarding PWD issues, but putting it in Omar’s hands was ten times WORST!!!! LOL!! Omar is no better than PWD! Name one thing that was done under him that’s completed? Him alone spent over $10mil and we can’t reap the benefits from one of them…GO SIT DOWN!!!
The point is, Government pays big money to train BVIslanders/Belongers in certain fields and when they return to work for Government they should be able to perform accordingly. Having paid staff doing NOTHING while bringing in Omar’s in-laws to do WORST doesn’t make sense! But of course, you’re just a critic (loyalist) so you won’t care anyway!
real talk is right, politics is when you get a job that is suppose to be handle by the correct person or department but we shall be all glad that before xmas this will be now passable.
The project was put under Natural Resources and Labour because the VIP Government was a corrupt government. Omar Hodge should be made to pay back all the money that he mispent. Infact the VIP government should be put in jail. The PWD workers just sit along the road and when they do work it is not supervised. They need to be made to do the work that is given out as big contracts while they sit around doing nothing. This is why the country is the way it is because the people is sitting on their common sense. Come on wake up and be fair. NDP is going to correct the atrocities that have been going on for years of VIP rule.
