After a month-long delay, the Ministry of Communications and Works will resume work on the road re-alignment project on portions of the James Walter Francis Drive this Saturday, March 20 at the entrance to Wickham’s Cay II.

Work was suspended on February 20 after a challenge was lodged by a property owner to the government project. Since then the Minster for Communications and Works Honourable Julian Fraser, RA has been working diligently to resolve the matter, according to the Acting Permanent Secretary, Mr. Julian Willock.

As part of the project, portions of the James Walter Francis Drive will be re- aligned in preparation for the installation of traffic signals at the entrance to Wickham’s Cay II.

“Government is planning ahead to ensure that the road infrastructure can accommodate the expected influx of people and vehicles that will be traversing the vicinity with the opening of a major office building in the area,” said Honourable Fraser.

Minister Fraser further stated that the completion of this project is very important for the ministry. “This is a priority for the ministry because control mechanisms need to be in place and safety and accessibility issues need to be addressed to ensure continued infrastructural development in this area,” he added.

Work is expected to be completed within three months. The ministry does not anticipate any major interruption to the businesses on Wickham’s Cay II. The public, however, can expect that during the construction phase, lanes will be closed
periodically. Traffic cones and signs will be used to delineate traffic diversions and lane closures in order to minimise traffic delays.

On February 11, the Ministry of Communications and Works signed four contracts with Mr. Dereck Marshalls, K & S Construction, Ronald E. Smith and R & F Construction to complete civil, drainage and road rehabilitation works for the Wickham’s Cay II project. The four contracts totalled approximately $191,694.

Government remains committed to the modernisation and expansion of the Territory’s infrastructure through the development of and implementation of proper drainage systems.

I don’t mind if they want to put lights in there – the present traffic lights on the divided highway work well enough. But they need to learn their lessons from the last fiasco and get it right this time.

Personally it drives me crazy that if you come out of the Moorings and you want to go East, you have to either take an illegal U-turn at Treasure Isle or go all the way around the roundabout.
