Minister of Education and Culture Hon. Andrew Fahie, Principal of the Robinson O’Neal Memorial School Gracia Stevens, members of the Adopt-A-School Committee, and students show off the $5,000 cheque received from the owners of Bitter End Yacht Club Dana Hokin-Garvey and her husband Robert Garvey at the ceremony. They were accompanied by teachers, parents, guardians and well wishers.

The Robinson O’Neal Memorial Primary School officially welcomed, with great enthusiasm, their adopter, the Bitter End Yacht Club.

It is the 10th school to join the programme and receive an initial contribution of $5,000 from its adopter, as part of the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Adopt-A-School Programme.

In a brief ceremony at the school, Minister of Education and Culture Honourable Andrew Fahie thanked the owners Dana Hokin-Garvey and her husband, Robert Garvey for their contribution.

Minister Fahie highlighted that the owners had travelled from Chicago with their daughter to do the presentation, “This signifies true commitment.” He thanked the family for their invaluable contribution, adding that, “This Company is not only interested in giving an annual monetary contribution but they want to contribute in the school’s development.”

In reiterating the importance of the programme the Minister said, “Education is everyone’s business and we need a united effort in order to tackle the challenges that exist.”

Fahie urged the students to respect and honour the contribution being made by their adopter, stating that the adoption shows that the company cares about the North Sound community and the youths.

Principal of the school Gracia Stevens said she was overjoyed when she got the news that Bitter End Yacht Club was going to be their adopter.

She said from its inception the company, the owners, management and staff, have cheerfully given support to the school. “We are profoundly grateful for your generosity in the past and we will cherish this very moment. We look forward to a bright future as we plan and work together for the common good of all.”

Hokin-Garvey in responding said when she learned of the Adopt-A-School Programme she immediately knew that her company would play a significant role in the initiative.

She explained that many of her employees’ children are enrolled in the Robinson O’Neal Memorial Primary School and many of the company’s key personnel and executives have attended and graduated from the institution.

“Adopting the school is my way of extending our commitment to the future. We all in our own way make an imprint on the future and when guided by great leadership and vision our ideas become actions that can truly inspire a change that lifts us all,” she further explained. The adoption was made in memory and honour of her grandfather the Late Myron Hokin who passed the Bitter End torch to her.

Deputy Chairman of the Adopt-A-School Committee Carlene Parsons said she was very excited that the school was adopted by a company that has roots in North Sound and she urged other businesses to support this important initiative in education.

The Adopt-A-School Programme was launched by the Ministry of Education and Culture in October, 2007.

A total of ten primary schools have already been adopted under this programme.

The main purpose is to provide a necessary link between schools and donor organisations, to educate and ensure that each school environment is conducive to a dynamic learning experience.
