Contractors and artisans in the territory will again have the opportunity to take Level I of the Safer Building Course when H. Lavity Stoutt Community College begins the programme in February.
The course will be conducted at the College’s Centre for Applied Marine Studies, Paraquita Bay, starting Monday 13 February. Classes will be conducted over a period of eight weeks, with sessions on Mondays from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., ending on 2 April.
Level I of the course covers topics that introduce participants to pre-construction planning, site preparation, access road construction, building layout, foundations, walls, roofs, storage of materials, and maintenance.
The main focus of the course is on pre-construction planning and how this helps in the timely and cost-effective completion of well built structures. It also seeks to identify ways in which vulnerability in building methods can be reduced.
The Safer Building Course has been endorsed by Government’s Department of Trade and Consumer Affairs and the Department of Disaster Management. HLSCC continues to administer the course in collaboration with DDM.
Facilitators for the course will be Gregory Adams, Project Manager for Larry Adams Construction and Proprietor of Onyx Ventures, a local architectural firm; and Louis Potter, a Physical and Environmental Planner with a special interest in integrated decision-making.
Mr. Adams has acquired vast knowledge and experience in architectural design and planning. He holds a Bachelor’s in Architecture from the Florida A&M University, a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning, with a concentration in Disaster Mitigation, from Texas A&M University, and a Certificate in Public Administration from the University of Texas at Dallas.
Since 1988, Mr. Potter has served as Chief Physical Planner in Government’s Town and Country Planning Department. His education includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts (Planning) from Pratt Institute, a Certificate in Site Planning from the University of Nottingham, a Graduate Diploma in Natural Resources and Environmental Management from the University of the West Indies, and an Executive Master of Business Administration, also from the University of the West Indies.
The course fee is $350, which covers all materials. For further information and registration, please contact Senior Administrative Officer at HLSCC Janice Dawson, tel. 852-7194, email jdawson@hlscc.edu.vg.
