ASEP Graduates - Minister of Education and Culture Hon. Andrew Fahie, Acting Chief Education Officer Dr. Marcia Potter, ASEP Coordinator Mrs. Cecily Malone and other well wishers join the Class of 2010 as they celebrate this milestone in their lives.

Minister of Education and Culture Honourable Andrew Fahie offered words of encouragement and hope to the graduates at the eighth ASEP graduation ceremony held at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College’s Auditorium last week.

Minister Fahie told the graduates that they have persevered and shown persistence beats resistance. He added, “In life it does not matter how we start but how we finish. Life does not promise us peace and joy it is up to us to will it, it only promises us time and space and it is up to us to fill it.”

Honourable Fahie urged the graduates to fill their space with the God given purpose for which they were placed on this earth, “Years from now no one will remember how you started with your success they will only remember how you finished.”

He told the students that their secondary certificate is equivalent to anyone that has graduated from secondary schools and the ASEP has touched hundreds of lives since its inception in 2002.

Acting Chief Education Officer Dr. Marcia Potter also joined Minister Fahie in congratulating the students and told them that their hard work and determination have paid off. “Some of you this afternoon are accomplishing something that you thought you  never would,” she told the graduates, adding, “Your accomplishment is a tribute to you as well as to a number of persons who decided not to give up on you along the way.”

Dr. Potter urged the graduates to hold on to their dreams and to always strive for excellence.

Coordinator of the ASEP Mrs. Cecily Malone asked the graduates to take the following words with them as they continue their journey, “Do all the good you can by all the means you can in the ways and places you can and to all the people you can, which include the younger members of our community.”

Guest Speaker Niel Simon asked the students not to despise small or humble beginnings and to always embrace new things. He asked the students to set goals for themselves and to celebrate their accomplishments. “Do not be afraid to try new things. Take the next step now and move to another level by enrolling in the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College,” he urged.

Graduate Shernette Spencer told her classmates that they are the proof that with much “hard work, commitment and dedication dreams can come true”. She encouraged them to continue dreaming and fulfilling their dreams.

Special awards were presented to the top students in different subject areas. Shernett Spencer, Raja Pemberton and Noel Jardine received the award for Social Studies. Graduates Saverina Nibbs and Lahorney Hill received the award for English Language. The award for Mathematics went to Shernett Spencer and Shelly Ann Pope. Raja Pemberton and Ismael Astacio received the award for Human and Social Biology. Additionally, Shernett Spencer and Jario Ramirez were presented with the award for Information Technology.

Since its inception in 2002 the Alternative Secondary Education Programme has awarded more than 170 students with their secondary school certificate or a single subject certificate in a technical/vocational area. The goals of the programme are to provide another opportunity for individuals to complete secondary level equivalency education in both academic and technical/vocational courses and to offer persons in the community personal enrichment.
