The BVI Tourist Board has defended itself against criticisms that it did not render enough assistance to Miss BVI 2012 Shari de Castro during her preparation last year to represent the territory at the Miss Universe pageant.

Fifth District representative Delores Christopher raised the issue during the Standing Finance Committee meeting this month, noting that there was need for the provision of pertinent information about the BVI, including its historical sites.

Christopher, according to a report from the House of Assembly, told the Standing Finance Committee it was her understanding that information requested on de Castro’s behalf was not provided.

Responding to the concern, Director of the BVI Tourist Board, Sharon Flax-Mars, agreed that the information was not provided to Miss BVI last year.

Stating that there was need for dialogue with the persons in charge of the Miss BVI pageant, Flax-Mars added that such persons should have shared information with the Tourist Board in a timely manner.

She denied that the Board was solely at fault.

Flax-Mars also noted that it should have been clearly stated whether the Tourist Board was responsible for ensuring that Miss BVI was prepared for travel and informed about aspects of the BVI.

She added that the Board worked with de Castro within the confines of her term’s operations.

Flax-Mars further stated that it was not a matter of the Tourist Board not wanting to assist de Castro.

Culture Minister Myron Walwyn, in his contribution to the discussion, stated that he has been examining the reign of Miss BVI.

He disclosed that he, along with Brenda Lettsome-Tye, has met with some of the former Miss BVIs to find out some of the challenges they faced during their reign.

Walwyn noted that information was garnered from the meeting, adding that his team was working to improve the reign of persons selected as Miss BVI.

DeCastro, who was crowned Miss BVI in 2012, went on to represent the territory in November last year at the Miss Universe competition in Moscow, Russia. She however did not qualify for any of the top spot at the competition.

Before that internationally renowned competition, she won the 2013 Miss Caribbean World competition held in Tortola.

Since when does the BVI Tourist Board make a contestant for an international pageant (or any pageant for that matter) ready for it? Getting funding alone will not win you a title – there is much more to it! Winning Miss BVI and Miss Caribbean World do not even come close to Miss Universe. Let’s get real!

I do find that Sharie being in the news is when she always complaining about something. She is never on the news about something positive.

This is just plain out ridiculous. People get it through you all heads, she just couldn’t make it no matter what she didn’t received. There is a criteria for these shows she is /wasn’t adding up ok. And with the political thing you are thinking of, please leave it alone.

It’s time to move on from this issue. This is like beating a dead horse. Bury it already.

It is about time that Sherrie de Castro stop complaining about everything. I’m tired if hearing you complain now Sherrie. Make a contribution rather than just complaining all the time. You complained about the car not being good enough for you. You complained about not getting enough assistance in Ms. Caribbean World, the other Caribbean Show and Ms. Universe. You complain about the education system but what have you done to make it any better? Complaining all the time doesn’t help. Do something to make things better. Look at all the good things being done by the new Ms. BVI – Ms. Chichester. I’m getting her message. I’m feeling her care and concern. She is making a real difference. I thought her Christmas message was excellent. She is at horse race. She is at the schools. She is making a difference and I’m sure that she didn’t get any more money or official help than you have received.
It’s time to stop whining and complaining. You should be able to do better!!!
