Controversy and confusion is brewing over the Showtime Band as several members have parted ways and formed a new band – with a similar name.

Ottley Hodge told BVI News that he has the legal documents for the name Showtime Band which he left about two months ago.

Hodge has now formed a new band called Showtime HD band.

“The name Showtime is mine… I not willing to give up the name,” he told BVI News when we contacted the artiste to clarify the rationale behind naming a band so similar to Showtime.

The rhythm box player and engineer said he has no problem being approached by members of his old band to rename both bands. “We have no problem if they want to come and discuss it I have no problem with that, but they are saying they have more rights than us.” He hopes it does not come to a legal showdown.

“It’s an unfortunate situation because the fans are being affected by the split,” Hodge said. “So now when people want to hire I guess they will have to listen to both bands before making a choice.”

REASON FOR SPLIT

According to the artiste, who has been on the musical scene for more than 12 years, a meeting was held without his knowledge. Hodge said he heard that the general consensus was that he was “dead weight”.

“They never called me..never contacted me in anyway. It seems as though they made up their minds for me. I guess they decided because BOSS quit they  automatically assumed I was  going with him. I was kicked out…then three other members left with me. So Showtime HD was formed,” Hodge said.

A singer and two road crew members were the ones that left.

The versatile artiste was a member of the original Showtime, which dissolved. However, due to his determination it was revitalized in 1999.

Over the years, the band gained the respect and fan base in the Territory, USVI and throughout the Caribbean and are the Territory’s defending road march champions with hits including ‘Soca Pledge’, ‘VI Wine’, ‘Motion’ and ‘Hula Hoop’.

Meanwhile, Roger Frank manager of Showtime Band, declined to comment on the departure of the four band members and the formation of Showtime HD band.

However, he did say the new replacements will be introduced to the public in the upcoming months.
