The trial for Lenn Lennard and Bakembe George, the two men who are accused of cultivating cannabis on Virgin Gorda, was administratively adjourned on July 3.
Lennard and George are charged with cultivation of cannabis plants and will be returning to the Magistrate’s Court on August 10 at which time their trial is expected to begin.
It was disclosed that the Crown intends to call six witnesses, three of which were to give evidence on July 3.
Both men are on remand and the matter is set as a priority one.
Lennard is being represented by Anthea Smith, while George is represented by Patrick Thompson.
It is alleged that on 29 December 2011, Virgin Gorda Police were informed that there was a suspected cannabis plantation in the area of Taylor Bay, adjacent to the Virgin Gorda Airport.
It was stated that when Virgin Gorda Police went to investigate, they saw Lennard, George and another unidentified person on the said plantation uprooting (harvesting) cannabis plants.
It is alleged that the police called out to Lennard, however the three men ran into the bushes with the said plants. The police then gave chase but did not apprehend the men; however, the police found some cannabis plants that were hidden behind rocks in the area that the accused men ran into.
The Police allegedly returned to the plantation and retrieved about 3,479 plants ranging from seedlings to plants almost 6 feet in height. Police processed the scene and the plants were taken into custody.
On December 30, 2011, the accused Lennard and George were arrested.
