Residents of the Virgin Islands were urged to stay focus and to be aware that slavery is still alive, although in a different form.
The advice was delivered by Deputy Premier and Representative for the Seventh District, Dr. Kedrick Pickering, at the opening of the Moviene Fahie Festiville in East End/Long Look last evening, August 6. The deputy premier disclosed that slavery still takes place in the form of mental and economic slavery.
He said: “Those of us who have the responsibilities for leadership have to ensure that we never repeat from whence we came. Continually tell ourselves that those of us who forget our past are condemned to repeat it and we don’t ever want to go back in that direction.
“If we make the mistake of selling out our land, if we make the mistake of selling out our real estate, and if we make the mistake of giving up ownership of this beautiful country, that is when we will become enslaved…. And it will come disguised in the form of money, in which people from other places and other cultures will invite us to sell what we own to the highest bidder, and it will look good. They will offer you prizes that you will find it difficult to refuse, but we must continually remind ourselves that there is a form of slavery that could circumvent us…o r take over us so to speak.
“We celebrate the emancipation of our former slavery that none of us will ever want to see come again. But continually remind ourselves that if we fall asleep, if we slip up, if we make mistakes, we could very well end up in a different form of slavery; whether you call it mental slavery, economic slavery, whatever. But it is staring us in the face if we don’t continuously remind ourselves.”

I listen to all these speeches and programs given and hosted by our elected officials and wonder why do they think that we the electorates are stupid. Sometimes I wish they would really replay their sound bites and listen to themselves. He here talking about slavery…what about these businesses that overwork the staff and don’t pay them? What about freedom of speech? Just this week in Virgin Gorda a young lady was fired from her job for standing up for what is right and because the powers that be was exposed she was fired. Now when one in the BVI and a BV Islander at that, can’t speak or stand up for what is right, tell me what is the purpose of these slavetalking politicians.
Any one notice how Dr. PICKERING’S two colleagues on the stage have their heads hang down, and look like they want to get the HELL out of there?
Having the current most oppurtunity to do something for the district after four terms in office and instead chasing waterfalls for less than 20% of all arrivals and departures; arent priorities and judgement to be questioned. Particularlly now when all arival numbers are down and may be down for sometime.
Three fatal pedestrian accidents in the district one being a school child leaving school. An existing plan for an EE/LL harbour reclamation and roadway project. Some kind of plan to fix brandywine bay. But if they dont get a runway and a cruise pier its outside/foreign interests are what is to be feared.
Politics is show business for ugly people..LOL! Never will you hear more double talk out of the mouth of anyone like you will hear from politricksters..LOl!
By the way, who are more enslaved than politicians? They get paid from other peoples labor and take commands from their masters. Hypocrites and parasites they are, thieves and liars. Promising anything to anyone that will vote for them, charities which they don’t have in their possessions. They will steal from one person to give to another and lie and talk about we need to have balance. What kind of balance can we have when we reward people who don’t want to produce anything with the labor of those who do produce. Almighty said give freely, politicians say give or we will take it from you. These disciples of the devil need not say they are there to do good, for no good can come from a corrupt organization. The governments around the world act like they are a god and so does these so called leaders. And the sheeple serve them not knowing that they reject the true Creator and serve this false god with no security. There is Rot at the Top and none can see it. Have you seen these so called leaders pray for a cure, or repented yet? Yet the sheeple vote for them and never ask which god do they serve. When you vote and give your right for the devil to represent you, there is no need to say you serve the Creator, since your representative does not pray to the Creator for you. Is it not hypocritical to say you serve The Almighty Creator who cannot sin or do evil and then vote for the same evil in your government to protect and take care of you? What needs to be said is that people are already asleep and in a different form of slavery.
P.S we can all ignore reality, but we can never ignore the consequences of reality.
Here is something to watch

Shalom!
Smith looking out for Smith, Skelton looking out for Skelton, Vanterpool looking out for Vanterpool, Myrant got his people; Who Pickering looking out for? the 7th has one of the highest unemployment rates but theres no speech about that.
this man must think we really stupid. he give political speech about not letting outsiders take over property while at the same time he make done deal to destroy trellis bay so that a few rich can fly bigger jets here.
Some of you don’t seem to know what slavery was. Slavery was the ‘ownership’ of individuals and total control over all their actions. Slavery was the abuse of human beings in the service of a master.
Slavery is NOT – living on a set of beautiful islands, 23rd richest nation in the world, driving big SUV, eating phat food and drinking whatever you want when you want if you want.
It is NOT having the legal right to sell the land your father or mother gave you so you can cash in and by a next SUV or a big heckin flat screen wireless iPhone, if das what you want.
Slavery is NOT having the chance to come and go as you please to any place your credit card want to take you, and carry your US passport when you go, if das how you choose to roll.
Slavery is NOT having young vibrant youth playing sport, making music, studying to go college, bigging up themselves for what they DO, not putting themselves down for what they can’t do.
Slavery is NOT having the chance to elect the greedy, divisive man who promise you a piece a pie if he get in, because he knows we all like sweet tings.
Slavery is NOT having 4 days of carnival bacchannal, if that’s what you want, celebrating the END of slavery in 1834.
Slavery is NOT what is going on in the BVI today in almost any single recognizable way to what it was 200 years ago except for ONE way. The slavery of the mind that makes us want to blame and cuss and fight with our own people – and anyone else now calling these islands home.
DO NOT insult those generations who went through REAL hardship. We need to understand how bless we are in these times. I believe that if we just make the smart moves – not the greedy ones or the angry moves – with the goodness inside our hearts, good things will come of it for us and our future generations. “None but ourselves can free our minds”.
Wow, PERFECT POST!!! Co-sign!
we the people will never want independence with none indigenous people in we HOA. Since last year the people have been enslaved under the NDP no media freedom and people cannot speak at a graduation. They better go from here with this crap when they are the government of enslavement
About 50% of the population in the BVI, can not call themselves residents, can not vote, they can not be represented in the goverment, they do not have equal rights to buy property, work, or get a trade license, but of course they have to pay taxes.
Talk about slavery now.
It is what going on here in our country that have us enslaved, it is not the people who migrate here and buy property. If government has laws but don’t enforce them whose fault is that? People who come to any one’s country to reside or to do business will abide by the laws of the land if they are properly established and enforced. It is these same damn politicians who are now talking about enslavement is who responsible for bringing back slavery in this country. They are the ones who meet secretly with outsiders and make deals that only benefit them. When we wake up the deal is done. They might as well stop their stupid talk about the UK, because if the UK did not have us under their umbrella, BVI will be invisible to the rest of the world. Whenever they can’t carry out their wicked deeds, they talk piss about enslavement, self determination and Independence. The politicians have cultivated a culture of greed in the BVI that now any thing, or any service that you need to buy have no ceiling on what you can be charged. The mentality is to get rich overnight, and this mentality was cultivated over time by the greed and under handed dealings of the politicians. Hedrick always with some nonsense that he himself don’t understand or believe. If BVI go independent he won’t live here.
So why then is the Hon Pickering in such a hurry to sell off the natural beauty of Trellis bay so that a few rich people can fly their jets in, and why are we giving away Wickhams Cay I so that the cruise companies can make more money? Why are we turning a blind eye to all who have defrauded the government of Millions of Dollars by evading the stamp duty? Grandstanding in front of the electorate is not good enough, action must be taken to save what is left of our country and ensure that our laws and customs are respected.
Let’s talk about the “Uncle Tom” Bajan and UK Police that enslave us daily. Shutting down nightspots during Festival. Rock trying to shut down East End festival because an artist sang about weed. Trying to eliminate our jouverts and bring them down to one. Not allowing our BVIslander police to do training or advancing up the ladder. We need to get rid of a whole lot of “Slave Masters’ pets” round here!
Please change your name to NONSENSE, then your blog will make more sense
I do not know if this is a pushback against the UK sensible and prudent oversight of our debt load and protecting us from lose-lose projects in which the cost to Virgin Islanders outweigh the benefits; the lion share of benefits accrue to investors.
Nonetheless, the Hon Pickering is on point in that we must be vigilant in not replacing physical slavery for mental or economic slavery. We have already started down this road. We are letting a few dollars cause us to part ways with our land and real estate. And if this trend continues future Virgin Islanders will only be able to sail by or drive by and lament that their grandparents once owned this or that piece of prized, precious property.
Just a few days ago there was an article on another online site about beach access restrictions. If we do not check ourselves and awake out of our slumber this trend will continue. We cannot be blinded and get intoxicated when others come making offers for our birthright.
Government needs to develop a sensible land use plan that affords Virgin Islanders the opportunity to enjoy and benefit from their land yet maintained it for generations. Lets look not only at the short-term benefits but also at the long-term consequences. Lets not get enslaved once again with our eyes wide open and with the means to resist.
Lets not get so comfortable that we suffer from the boil from syndrome. If one puts a frog in water and gradually heats it up, the frog will die. On the other hand, if a frog jumps in a pan of hot water, it will jump right back out.
we the people of this territory needs to wake and see what is happening around us today. Our ministers that we elected have concerns to what is happening here. If we stop our stupidity and focus on what UK is doing in this country and how we still remain under dictatorship. This has nothing to do with NDP Or VIP it has to do with the country. The long awaited improvement of Road Town is almost here but if we look at all the projects that had objections to and what the people of this territory are able to make use of and had controversy over when it were in the making- The highway, HLSCC, West End Road, Govt Complex just to name a few. the question remains what do want for our country? we need to come together and fight for our destiny and stop the damn VIP & NDP nonsense we need to do like the late NOEL LLOYD and the others who Join with him that day and tell UK this is our country WE can control it.
TOGETHER WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL -OUR LEADER S WERE ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY AR CAPABLE OF TAKING CARE OF OUR AFFAIRS- GOOD SPEECH MARK.
Great, I say we call for a referendum and demand that we become independent. Only then will we be able to control our destiny. We will be responsible to ourselves, have our own foreign policy, our own embassies around the world, our own currency, our own army, our own Coast Guard. No one will be able to tell us where or how to waste our money.
Hope this is a joke, a tongue and cheek statement. Independence is not in the cards for us now or for a long time. We need to put aside the feel good, emotional feeling and stare the real hard facts of independence squarely in the face. Bottomline is that we do not have resources to go independent. If we do we will become a third world basket case.
The UK putting the breaks on ndp projects so their messages have been of inslavement and getting taken over. Since the ndp has been in administration it already feels like the bvi has been enslaved and taken over by foreingers. God bless DeCastro and all those who arent afraid to speak up.
since london put the heat on them with that pier project, you’re hearing all kinds of slavery and independence talks
