Tortola, British Virgin Islands, February 1, 2011 – Sol Petroleum has teamed up with Nanny Cay Resort & Marina in a pilot scheme to raise funds for the Royal British Virgin Islands Yacht Club (RBVIYC) Junior Sailing Programme. The collaboration between the two businesses, which is retroactive from January 1, 2011, facilitates the collection of a donation from every gallon of fuel sold at the marina.

The monies will be paid over to the RBVIYC each month and will be used to advance the development of the programme for the young sailors of the territory.

Guy Phoenix, captain of sailing at the RBVIYC, approached Sol and Nanny Cay Resort and Marina to solicit support for the programme. The companies agreed to benefit the not-for-profit organization by a synergic approach based on their existing relationship as supplier/distributor. The RBVIYC is in the process of expanding the scheme to include other marinas offering Sol fuels.

“Sol provides the fuel for the majority of marinas in the BVI and we can easily facilitate this initiative with them,” said Deborah Benjamin, country manager for Sol. “This arrangement is a natural expansion of our existing involvement with the marine industry: We have been a long time supporter of the BVI Spring Regatta and this year we added the Charter Yacht Show to our marine advancement portfolio of non-profit organisations. Our corporate goal is to align ourselves with special interest groups where we can lend a hand in developing the communities where we do business. The RBVIYC’s youth programme is in keeping with this goal and we are pleased to launch the campaign in conjunction with Nanny Cay.”

Commenting on the joint venture, Guy Phoenix pointed out that Nanny Cay was a well-suited candidate for the pilot scheme. “Not only does the fuel dock sell Sol fuels but we recently selected Nanny Cay as the new sailing facility for the RBVIYC’s renewed youth programme,” he said. “We are really hopeful that this fund raising effort will be taken up by the other eligible marinas. It is a simple yet effective way of collecting money to help progress youth sailing in the BVI.”

“We are very happy to be a part of this plan,” said Miles Sutherland-Pilch, general manager for Nanny Cay Resort and Marina. “We already host the BVI Spring Regatta which is increasingly becoming a good revenue source for raffle ticket sales for the RBVIYC youth sailors. We also host the youth oriented Premier’s Cup and we like to see competitive and pleasure sailing reaching out to the future sailors and boat owners of our community.”

The youth sailing programme runs on Saturday mornings from 9.30 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. The aim is to encourage more beginners and new-starters to join, whilst also providing development for intermediate and advanced sailors.
