Employers who use the excuse of financial hardship to underpay their employees yet find funds to purchase lavishly for personal uses were frowned upon by Cromwell Smith aka Edju En Ka of the Umoja talk show.
“There is a situation where the employers are always crying business is bad, they can’t afford to give a raise, they can’t afford to pay a decent salary, but when you look at them they are flaunting all of the materials of wealth and are living lavishly,” Smith said.
The show’s host explained how such unscrupulous acts are usually hard on employees who are sometimes required to do extra tasks and have their salaries lessened.
“The employers living lavishly and saying business is bad and have the employees doing jobs that they not hired to do and want to cut their pay,” Smith said.
“You listen to government you listen to businesses. Everytime there is an economic challenge you never hear anyone talk about cutting profit or the employer takes a little less so that the employee could maintain a decent life,” he added.
Edju En Ka went on to say that: “The first thing them want to do is cut salaries, they either want to fire the employees or to cut the salaries, so it’s a situation where the employees gonna be forced to unionize in order to protect themselves. Do we want that or are we going to examine this situation.”

All the talk about inequality of wages, economic problems, is this not prophesied? Funny money and deceptive political policies are the reason for inequality. The Ephah is made great while the shekel(real money silver) has been made small. This is the reason for the rise in prices and the inequality of wages. Some people know what is happening and some don’t. The currencies used around the world are being debased(printing more and causing the value to drop), so u need more dollars to buy the same stuff. When will you all see that the love of the money god is what is the problem? The laws are also bought and paid for by those who have more funny money than the average man. Hence the scripture “the rich ruleth over the poor and the borrower is servant to the lender”. When people really need answers they should turn to the GOD of Creation, not man. For all mankind are created equal, but with funny money, there is no equality and will never be none! Only a fool will say in his heart there is no GOD! Therefore, that fool shall perish for lack of knowledge, because he has rejected GOD!
Shalom!
all mr smith is saying ,is that the employee aloneshould not take the loses.if the employer profit was ten $ then he could take eight and both individal live
iam not a fan of mr smith but this arthicle makes sense .why should the employee alone feel the resesion
Seems like you are the only person who read and understood this article. The others blog only out of shear ignorance and seems to have a personal ‘thing’ against Mr. Smith. This article is a fact. If things are bad, why are the employers still living a lavish life and the employees paying the penalty. It was only last week that a friend of mine mentioned to me about a general staff meeting at his company. His boss began by passing out an article on the situation in St. Croix, followed by ‘ya’ll should be thankful you have jobs’ What more facts do you need?
Crumbed chatting his usual pack of ignorant crap. Man ain’t got a clue about the real world and real work. Couldnt even keep the little jrwelrey box open
Union? LMAO!! How has that worked for the people in the US? Remember not so long ago when you could see “made in america” on products? Where can you find one now? Unions can be a good thing but most are NOT! The underlying principle is good, but most abuse it.
Please remember when you harass the people that own a company, when they pull out what will the union pay you with? LOL!! It’s the same with Labour Dept and what people are advocating. Keep harassing the people and one day we will be all standing at the roundabout next to them spanish boys looking ‘a wuk’.
Some employers can be bad yes, but they’re paying you a salary. If they decided to move away then what would you do? That’s the real question and the USA is paying dearly for their nonsense! They want the business to pay everything for them when things are good and even w hen things are bad. When things are bad, they don’t want a cut, but when things good they want a raise. Whether you agree or not, a business operates to make a profit.
Starting unions and having strikes etc. is a catch 22. Again, if these companies get fedup with all the labour issues, stinking attitudes, crime, high cost of operations and now unions, then what? It will have a ripple effect and we will become worst than Haiti within a month. Wanna bet?
Man I’m sick of thi man now. What has he done for the BVI besides spew hate against the ‘others’? How many BVIslanders has this ‘businessman’ employed over the years? Boss go find something constructive to do from pratting nonsense all day, everyday. Find some solutions instead of bitching all the time man, you’re getting on my nerves now!
Sometimes I wish all these Trust Companies move back to Panama and leave all these BVIslanders out of jobs, let me hear what he’ll be complaining about after that. Just sickening and ungrateful!!
If Mr Smith talked to the station owner, he will likely find advertising revenues are down while costs are up. He wants to beat up the chicken because not enough eggs? Go start and run a business or go work for a charity.
There are those who can produce and then there are those who can only talk. Mr Smith seems is of the second category – all talk, no sense. It is so easy to sit in a booth and spew nonesense. What Mr smith cannot comprehend is that not only has the volume in the BVI decreased, but prices have gone up, shipping has gone up, as a result duty goes up as well. So when businesses say that times are tough, they do so because they are.
