Christian said some persons are cleaning for free.

Territorial At-large Representative Archibald Christian said some of the persons who have been cutting the bush, removing derelict vehicles and keeping the BVI clean over the last weeks are doing it for free.

Speaking in the last sitting of the House of Assembly under other business, Christian said he could not leave the sitting of the House of Assembly without speaking about a topic that is very dear to his heart.

He said even though he may not accomplish much during his tenure as an elected official, there is one that he is determined to accomplish and that is to ensure that this territory, which is the paradise of the Caribbean, is clean up from Anegada to Jost Van Dyke.

“I apologize to no one who thinks this may be a little task or a little job. It’s a huge task because many of us always refer to these islands as a place we should keep clean for tourists and residents. I don’t like the phrase. I want to keep these islands clean for us first and our friends and visitors who come afterwards, so I want to publicly thank all the volunteers who over the last few weeks have been busy trying to clean up the place, cut bush, get rid of derelict vehicles and derelict items, and try and restore to these islands a sense of cleanliness and pride that we can all be proud of,” Christian said.

He said the workers have done the task for free.

“These volunteers have not been paid but they are concerned like myself about the appearance of our territory. I will also like to thank those who have been paid and I trust and praise that as we continue the campaign because it’s ongoing, it does not stop, it cannot stop, its an ongoing maintenance. I want to thank those who have been paid for what they have done so far and I’m hoping that in 2012 that we can get some reductions in the cost of keeping the territory clean,” Christian said.

When these bushes get cut down now, will the roots be fed something from growing up again? Cause these people are being paid now and in three months time, they need to cut down again.

I would like to humbly suggest that we all volunteer on a weekend in 2012 to clean up our respective communities. Let us all come out with our trash bags, weed wackers, machetes, gloves and anyone who owns a truck in the communities. Let us come together and do a massive clean-up and we can have community bbqs afterwards. I think it can be a great thing.

    Let’s do it!

Its good we can come together as a country and work without taking a penny. In the long run we will get paid off through increased tourism.

Stop telling lies! Some were paid, some were not! Not everybody was looking for a hand out! Archie asked for volunteers and many came forward. Others got contracts for bush cutting and other works, that was not a secret so hush!

Well done and many thanks to all the volunteers!

I have to admit, I will never understand why non-violent prisoners aren’t out doing this sort of work. If they were offered this task in exchange for a reduced jail term, I think there would be several takers.

One week of work would get their sentence reduced by two weeks ~ or some such deal. It would benefit the territory, the prisoners and would help alleviate the overcrowding issue as well.

A hearty thank you is in order to all the volunteers. I would like to suggest to all that just like we would take care & pride in our homes, we should do the same for the islands and environment of which we share. I have travelled to some countries whereby the moment you enter that country, it’s abundantly clear that they take pride in their country and environment. We should be no different.

Amen. And how about we discontinue the BVI Solid Waste Dept. programme where BVI youth are paid $10 per hour in the summer to clean up trash . I think summer employment opportunities for youth are great, but that programme sends the wrong message!

Archie well done. It is about time that we take pride in our island and give back as a community to clean it up before it gets out of hand and looks disgraceful and to have tourists blog and tweet about the BVI and its appearance. Good job to all the volunteer.
