Tuesday, June 22 – Primary Students Rhevaun Sprauve (St. Georges), Zora Williams (BVI Seventh Day Adventist) and Creitanya Brewley (Althea Scatliffe) are the top three performers, respectively, of the Primary Five Examination this year.

A total of 305 primary students passed this year’s examination and will be moving on to secondary school.

Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Andrew Fahie conveyed his congratulations on June 18 to the students who succeeded in the comprehensive examination. “I commend each one of you for investing in your own future,” he said, adding, “Your hard work and dedication on this continuous journey of knowledge has proven that the size of your success is determined by the size of your belief. Remember, you are the one who hold the key to what and who you will be.”

The results revealed that of the 358 students who sat the primary-five examination, 85% passed with grades one and two, and 15% failed. Students who have earned grade C or above in two subjects and have failed either Mathematics or English with a grade of 45% to 49% are required to attend skills building programme in July and can register for high school after successful completion of the programme.

Last year 390 students sat the Primary Five Examination of which 328 students were successful. The primary-five examination is a Territory-wide testing tool used by the Department of Education to assess students’ ability in English, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science as a pre-requisite for admission to secondary schools.

the private school(seventhday adventist) has something that no school in the public sector has and that is discipline….look at the high school as an example…no teacher should be tellin their students about their mother because of anger but you find that happening in the public school….that is not good….you need to look at the big picture…there is nothing wrong with the private or public school system you just have to appeal yourself to the fact that the private school has discipline and most students attending there are not from this island so they have to make the best of what they can get to be at the top…even if the island children get AAA and those from here get DDD they will get a job leave the one that got AAA so leave the private school and their good work

you are quite right…. i myself understand that the results were disappointing. Andrew Fahie really needs to look into the administration part of these schools.

Great to see this. But overall I understand that the results were very dissapointing.

Interesting that 11 of the top 15 graduates are from private schools. Is this indicative of the public school system or is it indicative of the rumour that I've heard that one particular private school focuses a lot of effort on mastering test taking for the primary 5.

We need to analyse the stats that are produced from these results and track the kids through high school to see if we are learning anything from the progression of our kids. It could be very revealing about our school system, especially the private vs public, as well as other factors. This year may be a good year to pilot a study tracking the kids, looking at factors like parenting at home, study habits, extra curricular (sports, performing arts), activities, sibling involvement. Wake up Ministry, lets see what going on with our system and our kids
