Tortola, British Virgin Islands, April 3, 2012 -  Hosted by Sol at the Regatta Village, Nanny Cay, junior sailors of the Royal BVI Yacht Club (RBVIYC) raised $4000 through raffle ticket sales during the 41st BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival (BVISR) held March 26 – April 1.

The raffle is the largest annual fundraising effort undertaken by the club’s junior sailors and proceeds of the ticket sales will be used to purchase equipment for the youth sailing programme.

“This is the second year that we have hosted the RBVIYC at our tent,” said Deborah Benjamin, country manager for Sol. “The youth sailing programme is going from strength to strength and as a perennial supporter of the RBVIYC, we are happy to be contributing in practical ways to the progress of the territory’s young sailors as well as providing financial assistance to the programme.”

Sol, a gold sponsor of the BVISR since 2006, further boosted the youth sailing programme’s income with a cheque presentation at the village from funds collected through an ongoing initiative collaboratively run with Nanny Cay. The joint sponsorship effort makes a donation to the RBVIYC junior sailing programme from every gallon of fuel sold at the Nanny Cay Marina fuel dock.

At the Governor’s cocktail party held on the eve of the first day of the regatta, the BVISR committee was awarded gold membership from the Clean Regatta organization, Sailors for the Sea. One of the elements that secured the recognition was the oil spill responder kits provided by Sol for each of the pin and mark boats on the water during the races.

“Each year Sol has provided the BVISR with an item designed to minimize the impact of boating fuel on marine life,” said Deborah. “This year’s donation of the oil spill responder kits reflects an aspect of our corporate policy of environmental awareness and protection and that is demonstrated on a much larger scale at our annual industry oil spill management training sessions.”

The raffle winners’ names were announced by Miss Benjamin during the BVISR final awards ceremony at Nanny Cay. The Sol prize of a Tortola/San Juan roundtrip ticket was won by Tim Ebel. Clair Burke won a stay at an Elite Resort, Rob Knock won lunch for two at Biras Creek Resort and Janet Oliver won dinner for two at Peglegs Restaurant, Nanny Cay. Dennis Versola, Phillip Graham, Glenn Metts, Mike Evan, Nikki Foote and Jaques Rout each won a bottle of Necker Island champagne. Visitors to the Sol tent also were invited to enter a free draw for a chance to win one of eight, Sol branded, premium prizes.

Sol is the largest petroleum company in the BVI and supplies the marine community at Hodges Creek, Nanny Cay Marina, the Moorings, Village Cay, Bitter End, Biras Creek, Peter Island, Oil Nut Bay, Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour and Leverick Bay. Sol is a committed supporter of community initiatives including Virgin Islands Search and Rescue, the Leverick Bay Poker Run, the Green VI Glass Studio, the Moorings Interline Regatta and is a partner of the BVI Athletics Association.

The children did a wonderful jog selling raffles, showing their superb sailing techniques on the Thursday, and deserve all of the community support, along with Sol and Nanny Cay…these small ones will be our sailors of tomorrow, representing us all over the world and shinning…for themselves and for us, proud British Virgin Islanders.
