Wednesday, February 1 – Theft from motor vehicles in Road Town as well as the outskirts dominated last week’s crime reports.

Nine vehicle related thefts were reported, eight of which were thefts from motor vehicles while one was a theft of a vehicle in Cane Garden Bay. On two occasions, cash of between $1,000 and $1,500 was taken from vehicles.

Police recorded seven burglaries in the Hope Hill and Greenland, Long Look, Stephens Estate areas six of which took place in the daytime while homeowners were at work. Electronic items, jewelry and cash were the items taken.

In one case in the Stephen Estate area, a victim woke to see the figure of a man walking in the dark. She later discovered her handbag and its contents missing.

While vehicle related thefts are crimes of opportunity, Police believe there is a common perpetrator or set of perpetrators travelling in a motor vehicle and committing the burglaries around Hope Hill and in the eastern end of the island.

Persons who may have seen any suspicious behavior in the areas or may have information in relation to these incidents can call Crimestoppers anonymously and confidentially at 1-800-8477 or the East End Police Station at 495-1729.

Hmmm, I worked for a police force in another country and some of the female police officers were tiny little things…but they could bring you down faster than you could imagine. They do go for training and have to pass certain standards you know.

If the expats didn’t take almost all the jobs, we would not have this problem. The youths are turning to crimes because they can’t find work.

I know many Tolians that just dont want to work. They are very picky as to where they want to work so what Tolians don’t want another person who is not from here will take cause they have responsiblities. Stop playing the blame games.

This is becoming all too common place, along with muggings, boat and house break ins. Reporting to the police is only good for insurance purposes (just like in most places). Many know who these perpetrators are, but we don’t want to speak out against them.

It won’t be long before all this criminality become associated with the BVIs and people decide to go somewhere else. Who feels comfortable visiting places where office and home windows and doors have bars, alarms, security systems etc? Not my choice of place for a relaxing vacation. Sad to say, but this seems to be where we’re heading.

One night, sometime ago, I was totally traumatized when my vehicle was broken into and my handbag, which was lying on the floor, was stolen.
Thieves, please do us the favor and look gainful employment.
These lazy, lawless bums have us living in fear. It is high time they stop their nonsense.

Who would leave their handbag in the car? Leave absolutely nothing in your car! Why give perps a reason to break a window or pop a lock? Other good advice for women, do NOT pick up a hitcher and allow them to sit in the front seat. Always make them sit in the back and place your purse in the front with you. Also, don’t leave your purse on the passenger seat while driving through an area slowly with the windows down. You don’t need someone reaching, grabbing your bag, and running off in the opposite direction.

It might not be such a good idea to have an unknown male sit behind you either, especially if you are alone. This provides an opportunity for use of force or a weapon or the threat of using a weapon even if there is none. I no longer pick up any adult male I don’t know! And I don’t stop for ANYONE at night!

I don’t stop for anyone anymore either after having my wallet lifted from my purse to someone I gave a ride to. But I know of many ladies who say they do what I suggested above. Hate to think the BVI would have men that would resort to the type of violence you are suggesting, but the country has been changing over the years, so I guess it is only a matter of time :-(
