Thomas, Huggins sentencing postponed

A woman found guilty of manslaughter for stabbing her ex-boyfriend and a man for raping a 15 year-old girl will have to wait a few more days to know how many years they will be spending behind bars. The duo was expected to be sentenced on Tuesday, June 29, 2010.
Lawyers for Shonovia Thomas requested extra time from High Court Judge Indra Hariprashad-Charles to prepare mitigation for the sentencing hearing now pushed back to July 1, 2010, BVI News was told.
Thomas, 22, who was initially charged with murder, was found guilty of manslaughter by reason of provocation by an all female jury on June 16, 2010. Taking the stand in her defense, Thomas had told the court that she stabbed Archie ‘Basha’ Todman, her ex-boyfriend, with a rat tail comb because he was pushing her around, adding she never thought the comb would have killed him. Todman bled to death from internal injuries.
The incident happened at Todman’s Hunthums Ghut apartment in the wee hours of the morning of October 2, 2008.

Meanwhile, 53 year-old Franklyn Huggins accused of raping his girlfriend’s daughter at the couple’s Soldier Hill home will know his fate on Tuesday, July 6, 2010.
He was found guilty of the offence on June 21, 2010.
According to the prosecution sometime in the early afternoon on January 21, 2007, Huggins raped the then 15 year-old in her bedroom while the two were home alone.
In her testimony, the virtual complainant (VC) said Huggins showed her a pornographic movie of a couple engaging in oral sex. She testified that Huggins told her he could make her feel like that. Feeling uncomfortable the VC left the bedroom and entered into hers. It was then Huggins is said to have entered the VC’s room clad only in his underwear.
According the VC Huggins then forcibly opened her legs and penetrated her. The VC said the act occurred for about 20 to 30 seconds. She also claimed Huggins touched her breasts.
