Friday,  December is 10 International Human Rights Day which commemorates the adoption by the United Nations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

The protection and promotion of human rights is one of the priorities of British foreign policy. The new British government believes that the interests of the United Kingdom are best served in an international society that is based on good governance, democracy and rule of law.

On 15 September 2010, Foreign Secretary William Hague delivered a major foreign policy speech on “Britain’s values in a networked world”. He said, “There will be no downgrading of human rights under this Government and no resiling from our commitments to aid and development. Indeed I intend to improve and strengthen our human rights work”. You can read the full speech at http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/news/latest-news/?view=News&id=22864405.

The Virgin Islands Constitution Order 2007(Chapter 2) has extensive provisions aimed at protecting and promoting human rights. The Governor’s Office takes a keen interest in human rights issues:
• Last year we provided funding to the office of Gender Affairs to enable them to draft an important new Domestic Violence Protocol.
• We will be arranging a ‘Building Human Rights Capacity’ programme in the Territory early next year, with funding provided by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Department for International Development (DFID). This programme aims to improve human rights awareness and address human rights issues in accordance with relevant international treaties.
• We are currently working closely with the Attorney General’s Office and other government departments and agencies on the draft Human Rights Commission Act, which is to be established in accordance with Section 34 of the Constitution.
