FEBRUARY 6—National Heptathlon and Pentathlon record holder and Central Arizona College freshman Kanishque Todman, qualified for the upcoming National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) Indoor Championships, after winning her indoor Pentathlon debut at the Pima Aztec Indoor Invitational on Saturday.
Todman, who came within a centimeter of her Long Jump personal best during her second collegiate competition at the Mountain T’s Invitational in Flagstaff Arizona on Jan 28 when she cut the sand at 5.42m (17’9½”) to place fifth overall in the invitational segment of the competition—improved on the mark on Saturday when she amassed 3,181 points for the victory.
Tackling what is normally a two-day event compressed into a one-day affair, Todman the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Jr. Championships U-20 Pentathlon bronze medalist, dropped her 60m Hurdles debut time of 10.13 seconds from Jan 21 to victorious 9.58 as she would sweep all five events by picking up 792 points.
She upped her Long Jump best to 5.54m (18’2½”) to collect 712 points for the effort then heaved the Shot Put to a personal best 10.30m (33’9½”) adding 549 points to her tally. She padded her total with 566 points after a High Jump leap of 1.45m (4’9”) and ended the day with an 800m run of 2 minutes, 40.98 seconds for another 562 points.
Todman’s 3181 points total, places her at #2 overall—64 points behind Iowa Central Community College’s Javona Ford’s 3245—on the NJCAA 2012 list. The NJCAA Indoor Championships will be held on March 2-3, at Eastern Illinois University.
Elsewhere on the collegiate scene, Portland State Vikings Sr. Karene King ran a season’s best of 7.58 in the 60m at the New Balance Invitational in New York—where teammate Dominique Maloney and Morgan State Jr. Britney Wattley also competed. King’s time was 34th overall. She was second in her 200m Championships heat in 24.28—the 19th best time overall.
Maloney won her 400m heat in 57.51 seconds the 21st best mark of the meet.
Wattley ran a personal best of 7.63 in the College 60m Consolation final to finish third—matching the same time she ran in the prelims. She had her second 24 second race, covering the 200m 24.92 to place 13th overall in the College segment.
