Exciting tourism education options continue to capture the attention of high school and primary school students throughout the BVI.

The BVI Tourist Board has engaged in a variety of interactive programmes with students to broaden their knowledge on tourism as well as to create a greater understanding of the role tourism plays in their lives. These programmes include classroom presentations, Day as a Tourist where students tour the island and learn historical facts about the BVI, job training and tourism competitions.

“It is important to keep our children involved and informed of their culture, and the history and livelihood of the BVI. This is why we immerse them in educational ventures where they can learn about tourism as well as historical facts about their country”, said Natasha Chalwell, Policy and Product Development Manager.

Each tourism education activity is geared towards students not only learning, but participating in activities that will allow them to better understand the tourism industry. The class presentations are divided into different areas covering topics such as tourism in the BVI, sustainable tourism, careers in tourism, marketing BVI tourism and the BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission. Day as a Tourist provides an excellent opportunity for the students, by allowing them to become a tourist for that day, touring the BVI whilst learning valuable facts about the islands and its culture.

On-the-job training is designed to offer valuable work experience to high school students between the ages of 15-17 years in efforts to expose them to the skills necessary to work in the tourism industry. This programme will run for two weeks starting 2nd April and ending on 13th April 2012. The BVI Tourist Board has prepared the students prior to their placement in the different tourism sectors with a job orientation as well as with tips on how to provide elite customer service.

In addition, the BVI Tourist Board has recently launched a Trash to Treasure competition, which is geared towards primary and secondary school students. In this competition students are encouraged to be creative by making usable items out of household trash. At the end of the competition the winners will receive prizes and the winning items will be used in tourism projects.

The students have shown great excitement and interest as they take part in these educational experiences. They are encouraged to ask questions and voice their input on what they have learned or encountered throughout the tourism education activity. At the end of each activity students are asked to submit assignments based on what they learned during the programme.

The BVI Tourist Board will continue to engage students in tourism activities, as this is a means of securing the future of tourism in the BVI.
