The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) last week hosted “Telecom Expos” at some of the Territory’s high schools as part of activities for World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) to be held locally under the theme, “Molding Your Future through Technology”.
At each expo, officers from the TRC along with representatives from LIME, BVI Cable TV and the Ministry of Communications and Works highlighted the significance of WTISD and careers in the telecommunications industry, and also promoted the TRC’s Telecom Expo essay competition.
TRC’s Director of Human Resources (HR) Karia Christopher, encouraged students to learn more about the telecommunications industry and WTISD, observed on May 17.
She explained that the purpose of WTISD is to raise the awareness of the benefits the Internet and other information and communication technologies bring to society today and highlighted careers in the telecommunications industry.
To that end, Christopher said, “The TRC’s goal is to introduce careers that students may not have previously known about. This is to ensure there is proper succession planning in the Virgin Islands, specifically in telecommunications.

The Ministry’s representative Andrew St. Hilaire spoke to students about the essay guidelines which stipulate that eligible participants must be at the fourth or fifth form levels, the essay must be geared towards the presentations at their school’s
Telecoms Expo, and entries must be submitted via email to [email protected] before or on the May 17 deadline.
Online registration is a prerequisite to entering the competition.
Prizes include an iPad and engraved plaque for the essay winner of each of the seven participating schools.
The overall winner will also receive a trip for two to attend the International Telecommunication Union’s Telecom World 2011 Conference in Geneva, Switzerland on October 24 – 27, along with $1,000.
For detailed information on the essay competition, students can visit the TRC’s website at www.trc.vg or the local online news sites and click on the “Telecoms Expo” advertisement.
On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays of last week the group presented to the Claudia Creque Educational Centre on Anegada, the Elmore Stoutt High School and Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School on Tortola and the Bregado Flax Educational Centre on Virgin Gorda.
On May 5 the group will visit the Technical and Vocational Institute, Cedar School and St. George’s Secondary School.
