UPDATE: Controversy reins as Sistah Joyce is declared winner of Calypso contest

BVI News Online - Sunday, July 28th, 2013 at 1:00 PM

First-place winner Sistah Joyce and second-place winner Ojinga

Sistah Joyce, who was declared the winner of the 2013 Calypso show competition shortly before daybreak, was not the most popular of the 13 calypsonians who clashed for the crown and a cash prize on $8,000.

The winner, whose real name is Joycelyn Searles, highlighted various controversial issues in her two songs; sometimes pulling the most sensitive heartstrings of those in earshot.

Her first song entitled ‘BVI Is Home Sweet Home’ displayed strong patriotism. It was however laced with anti-regionalism lyrics that poured scorn on expats who complain about high rent and other issues in the BVI.

Sistah Joyce went as far as telling expats who complain to pack their bags and go back to their country.

The one-time Reggae singer also accused expatriates of virtually exploiting the territory and its resources to enrich themselves back in their homeland.

“I know, in this country, the government not doing enough for we (citizens). But it’s not up to you expatriates to keep opening you mouth and spread us out like when you step in fowl s&%%t and dutty up yuh house,” she sang.

“I know some of you mean well, but those who don’t – if you ask me – they can go to hell!”

When Sistah Joyce completed her first song, a huge section of the crowd appeared speechlessly embarrassed.

She however returned to the stage in the second round of the competition with an inspiring piece – ‘Go Balo Experience’ – which encouraged women to avoid imitating her just-concluded stint at Her Majesty’s Prison, Balsam Ghut.

Sistah Joyce was arrested in April last year when defaulted on a court order for her to pay $40,000 after she pleaded guilty to marijuana-related charges.

Ojinga left patrons clamouring for more

The judging panel’s decision to declare Sistah Joyce the winner of the 2013 Calypso show also created controversy on the festival grounds before daybreak on Sunday.

Patrons openly expressed surprise that the victory was not given to Julian ‘Ojinga’ Cato who was clearly the crowd’s favourite, and who left patrons clamouring for more of his superbly arranged songs.

Ojinga captivated the audience with both pieces – ‘All About Money’ and ‘Put Love In Your Heart’. In the latter, he accused persons of trying to create disunity among ‘Tortolians and Island Men’ who have been ‘working together’ over the years.

“Look so long we singing together as one. Look so long we make a start, but wicked man want to tear us apart. Wicked man, put some love in your heart,” he sang.

Ojinga, who spoke with BVI News after the results were announced, stated that he respects the judges’ decision, adding that he has become accustomed to a certain treatment over the years.

“I won’t fight anything eno because I done accustomed to getting treat already. I am satisfied. I just want to educate the people and bring them together, and show them we are African descendants.”

Three-time winner of the Calypso competition Luther Butler – also known as Luther B – shared the view that Ojinga should have got the edge over Sistah Joyce, but he readily admitted that Sistah Joyce also did an exceptional job.

“I think Ojinga did enough to win if it was up to me; based on what I saw. Then again, with Sistah Joyce coming back from behind the prison walls and doing what she did, is truly exceptional,” he declared, adding that he respects the decision of the judges.

Sistah Joyce, in the meantime, told BVI News Online that she is happy for the victory. “I feel excellent (and) great. Who Jah Bless no one curse.”

Asked if she thinks the judges made the right decision, she replied: “Most definitely.”

The placing

Sistah Joyce, who was adjudged the winner, was also awarded for Best Arrangement and Best Lyrics.

Ojinga was declared First Runner Up. He also won Best Performance.

Second Runner-Up is Renold Phillips, also called King Paido.

The Third Runner-Up, Luther B, had won the competition on three occasions, including last year.

Speaking about his defeat, Luther B told BVI News Online: “It’s a disappointment but you have to realize that, in competitions, there is always a winner and the judges’ decision is final. We have to respect that.

“I started off late with my production and that did not help me a lot, but we are not going to make any excuses,” he further said.

Sistah Joyce, being the winner of the contest, will get $8000. The First Runner Up will receive $5000, the Second Runner-Up $3500 and the Third Runner-Up $2500.

All of the contestants received trophies.

Does it matter whether she from here or not? Or whether he last name is Searles, Vanterpool or O’Neal? Does it even matter NOW that she done win? When I last check the Festival’s moving right along! Some of you BVIslanders/Expatriates need not worry about the next man because when you worrying about her, she’s living life- stress & drama free. EVERYWHERE is made up of people from all nations- that doesn’t make them any less “from here” then you and I because we born here. When I last check they all got taxes to pay and if they break the law, they get the same treatment- a stint up Balo! You think Sis Joyce worrying aboutb any of you & your 2 cents? Please! And then when you get old you’ll be wondering why your life turned out the way it did. Take time to LIVE MORE & CRITISIZE less… it will take u a long way. Stop down pressing your fellow neighbors because REGARDLESS of who we all claim to be BEHIND FAKE NAMES ON HERE, WE ARE ALL TAINTED- so stop pretending to be HOLIER THAN THOU because while you busy keeping watch in Sistah Joyce backyard, it got who keeping watch of yours. DO unto others as you’d want done unto you. GOD Bless and SISTAH JOYCE YOU BIG EVERYTIME!!!!!!!!!

People, PLEASE stop put God’s name in common letters. “god” is an idol, “God” is the creator. So all those on social media including Facebook, please show some respect.

The only guarantee in life is that we will die. As far as heaven and hell is concerned – that’s pure stupidity – just think about and use the brains you have
