Tuesday, June 6, 2012 –Victor BVI is once again a proud sponsor of the 14th annual Premier’s Cup International Youth Regatta which is scheduled to take place from July 13th to 15th this year.
The regatta was first established as a means for participants of the Kids And The Sea (KATS) programme to be able to put into practice the skills they had learned over the course of the KATS water sports programme which teaches swimming, basic sea skills, boat handling and safety, scuba and sailing.
David V. Johnson, Chairman of Victor BVI and the developer of the Oil Nut Bay development and the YCCS Marina and Yacht Club presented the $5000.00 cheque, to Mr. Chris Ghiorse, KATS Executive Director earlier this week. Mr. Johnson said he was delighted to be able to support such a worthy cause for children and that he was looking forward to a sustained relationship with KATS to ensure that more youth from the BVI are able to benefit from the programme.
“We are extremely grateful to Victor BVI for their assistance and support over the years.’’ explained Chris Ghiorse “The sailors in the KATS programme are feverishly preparing for the upcoming regatta and with the continued support of companies like Victor BVI we will be able to host a world class event that students will look forward to joining in the years to come”.
He went on to explain that “The event is the only youth team sailing event in the Caribbean and brings together young people, between the ages of 10 and 18 years old, for a weekend of fellowship and competition. These programmes all contribute to the healthy development of the youth as they are exposed not only to sport and camaraderie, but also the excellent marine related career opportunities available to them right here in the BVI.”
With a little over one month to go there are already 10 teams confirmed for this year’s event. The defending champions from Anguilla will be looking to hold off the challenges from Antigua, Bahamas, Cayman, Nevis, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, Tortola, Trinidad & Tobago and the United States. More teams are expected to attend.
The teams will arrive on July 13th and will be greeted that evening by Premier Honourable Dr. D. Orlando Smith at the Welcome Reception Dinner. Racing will take place all day Saturday from 9am to 3pm and Sunday 9am to 1pm in the Drakes Passage outside Nanny Cay and the Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday July 15th at 2:30 pm.
The public is invited to attend the event on Saturday July 14th and Sunday July 15th to watch the action and meet the competitors. There will be a VIP boat on both days to take spectators out on the course to see the sailing up close.
