Virgin Islands students continue to excel at the New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) in Providence, Rhode Island, United States of America as 10 more students, of which eight are males, graduated from this institution earlier this month.
Minister for Education and Culture Andrew Fahie attended the commencement exercises on May 1, along with Acting Deputy Secretary Tasha Bertie and Senior Administrative Officer with responsibility for the Scholarship Unit Carol McCollin.
At the youth rally held on May 7, Fahie told the gathering that during his visit to the institute he met with NEIT officials who expressed their satisfaction with the academic performance of the Virgin Islands students.
“They stated that out of the 19 countries that attend NEIT, the Virgin Islands students excel the most; they are the most respectful and prepared,” the proud minister announced.
Minister Fahie told the Department of Information and Public Relations he also met with the graduates and the students who are currently attending NEIT.
He congratulated the graduates for their hard work and excellent academic achievement and told other students to take advantage of the resources which are being afforded to them at the university.
He added that at the meeting he urged the students to keep striving for excellence and to remember they are “ambassadors of this Territory”.
Bertie has also expressed her profound appreciation for the opportunity to once again see the efforts of Virgin Islands students who continue to make their mark at the New England Institute of Technology.
She noted, “the Virgin Islands students continue to make themselves, their families and the Territory proud of their accomplishments,” adding, “Particularly those male students whose performance are exceptional at the institution.”
She added, “This shows that there are young men in this Territory who can make their mark overseas and return to add positive contributions to our society.”
Eight of the 10 graduates are recipients of government’s scholarship programme.
Four students received bachelor’s degrees, namely Alice Abraham and Shekima Lettsome-Joseph (Business Management Technology), Claudette Smith (Information Technology, Network Engineering); and Leroy Abraham (Electronics Engineering Technology).
The other six graduates obtained associate degrees: Albert Maduro (Marine Technology); Brian Maynard (Architectural Building Engineering Technology); Darryl Bess and Devaughn Callwood (Graphics, Multimedia and Web Design Technology); Kamni O’Neal (Business Management Technology); and Kenrick Smith (Business Management Technology).
Government has had a formal agreement with NEIT since 2002.
Thirteen Virgin Islands students are currently attending NEIT under the Government’s scholarship programme.
Through its scholarship programme government continues to invest in education in order to create a trained human resource base that is employable, easily retainable and adaptable to the rapidly changing demands of the job market.
NEIT, based in Rhode Island, USA, is a 60-year-old institution accredited by the certification board of the New England Schools and Colleges. With 22 programmes available, approximately 2,600 students from 27 countries attend the institute.

This is very good and positive for our young people. I congratulate all of them and hope they can find jobs on their return home.
Darryll I’m happy and proud of you. Now you can come home and take over the designs industry because you are a natural.
