It was in 2009 that the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival was awarded a Silver certificate, the first of it’s kind ever given to a sailing event, by Sailors for the Sea, an organization committed to protecting the oceans and sponsors of the Clean Regattas Certification Program.
Following in the regatta’s footsteps, Virgin Textiles, the official clothing concession for the event, has made a commitment to ‘go green’ for 2011.
Owner/manager of Virgin Textiles, Brodie Faragher-Kneipp said: “We believe the environment is important and we wanted to do our part. This year, to compliment our 2011 line, we are offering accessories made from recycled, sustainable materials. ”
She added: “For those that need a bag, we’ll be using paper instead of plastic. Our shirts are mainly cotton, which is a classically sustainable material. Some of our booth shelving and backdrop will be made up of reclaimed wood and metal. All of these ideas are nothing new. In fact, before so many mass manufactured and synthetic materials were available, people used to use the methods we are employing.”
Faragher-Kneipp believes that these new endeavours tie nicely into her business model.
“Our inks are water-based as opposed to synthetic. Our screens are made the old fashioned way with wood framing and silk cloth and we recycle our screens using them over and over with new designs. And everything is done right here in Road Town. We believe the old ways are the best ways,” she said.
Unveiled for the first time, the 40th anniversary t- shirt design underscores the “Old Ways” theme, a classic yacht sets the stage for a classic beauty.
During the 2011 BVI Spring Regatta, April 1 – 3, a 36” x 48” gallery wrapped stretched canvas print of the design (value $475.00), will be raffled.
Raffle tickets will be sold for $5.00 each or five tickets for $20.00 and will be available only at Virgin Textiles booth. A portion of the raffle proceeds will be donated to the Green VI Foundation.
