Press release - Monday, April 23rd, 2012 at 1:23 AM

During the Easter Break basketball lovers on Virgin Gorda were privileged to participate in BVI Hoop It Up Foundation two-week Easter Hoops Basketball Camp on Virgin Gorda and Tortola.

The foundation’s travel expenses were sponsored by VOICESS, Virgin Gorda community group, in order to offer the youth players on Virgin Gorda the opportunity to attend the camp.

Players ages 6-14 attended the camp on Virgin Gorda, 9:30am to 12:00 noon, facilitated by coaches Brian and Kennedy from the Bahamas at the basketball court in South Valley.  Players 15-20 travelled to Tortola and participated in the camp from 1:00pm- 3:00pm facilitated by various visiting coaches at the Multi-purpose Gym.

On the final day of the camp all the players on Virgin Gorda travelled to Tortola for the closing exercises.  They received t-shirts, water bottles and certificates of participation.

It is the second time that VOICESS has made it possible for the youth players on Virgin Gorda to participate in the camp.  During December the group also sponsored travel expenses for the participants to travel to Tortola for the week-long Christmas Hoops Basketball Camp. Speedy’s (Virgin Gorda Transport) was aslo instrumental in assisting with special rates for the Camp.

VOICESS are a group of men and women from Virgin Gorda, whose primary purpose is community betterment. As members we all have one common bond, a love for our island and the desire to grow it’s PRIDE…by trying to find sane, long-term and inspiring solutions for our recognized “problem issues”. Our goal is to inspire our youths to grow into vibrant citizens, to preserve and enhance our islands pristine beauty while syncing with the 21st century advancements, to cultivate community unity, and cultural awareness. We want to elevate our people’s voice, create better communication forums and ultimately organize and carry out projects designed to achieve these goals. We want to seed, fertilize and ultimately harvest an island image like no other in the quality of it’s community involvement and spirit.

We are not allied with any particular Political party, Religious organization, one denomination or sect, we do not want to engage in controversy, neither endorse or oppose any causes.

Our primary concern is to elevate the quality of life of our people, so they can live a safe, vibrant, educated, and happy life. To this end we will elect a steering committee (rotating every 2 years), have a democratic format, meet regularly to discuss, plan and carry out community projects for the betterment of Virgin Gorda Pride!
