PRESS RELEASE: Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn has extended congratulations to the Virgin Islands representative at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games, Mr. Peter Adam Crook.

Mr. Crook will represent the Territory at the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia as he was inscribed as the BVI’s male Freestyle athlete in Half Pipe Ski on January 20.

Minister Walwyn in an invited comment to the Department of Information and Public Relations applauded Mr. Crook for his tenacity and skill which allowed him to qualify for the winter games.

The Sports Minister said, “The Virgin Islands continues to produce athletes of a high caliber who show tremendous skill in their area of expertise. Mr. Crook, I am sure will perform to the best of his ability and will make his mark at Sochi 2014. The Virgin Islands is indeed proud of his accomplishments and wishes him a safe and successful performance at this year’s games.”

President of the BVI Olympic Committee, Mr. Ephraim Penn also congratulated Mr. Crook as he represents the Territory on the international stage.

“The representation of the BVI in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games is the culmination of a four year endeavour which was initiated by a conversation with Adam Crook’s father, Barney Crook in March 2010 – just days after the Vancouver Olympics in February 2010,” Mr. Penn said.

The Olympic Committee president continued, “In the months following, the British Virgin Islands Ski Association was formed and recognised by the BVI Olympic Committee and by the International Ski Federation as the governing body for skiing in Territory.”

According to the BVI Olympic Committee, Mr. Crook is the sole member of the BVI Ski Association and has spent the last six years training and competing in Half-Pipe Skiing. He currently ranks 18th in the world.

The Virgin Islands Chef de Mission for Sochi 2014 Mr. Mark Chapman also congratulated Crook on his accomplishment.

“We had a year to wait and see if Adam’s sport, Freestyle Ski Half Pipe, would be admitted as a new sport for Sochi 2014. Then over the past eighteen months, as excitement heightened and Adam trained and competed fiercely at the very top level of his sport, he would qualify for the Winter Olympics in Russia. All of this has led us to February 18, 2014, when Peter Adam Crook will represent the British Virgin Islands in Sochi,” Mr. Chapman said.

Mr. Crook is the second Virgin Islander to represent the Territory at the Winter Olympic Games. The first was Mr. Erroll Fraser (1950 – 2002) in Speed Skating at the Sarajevo Winter Olympic Games in 1984.

Virgin Islands born and raised, Crook moved to the United States to complete his secondary education and graduated from Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy in June 2011.

He deferred college to concentrate full-time on his skiing competitions and has represented the Territory in New Zealand, Norway, France, Canada and the United States.

Mr. Crook received a scholarship from the Olympic Solidarity, the funding arm of the International Olympic Committee which was made possible through the BVI Ski Association and the BVI Olympic Committee.

The Ministry of Education and Culture supports Virgin Islands athletes as they “Create a Culture of Excellence” in sporting endeavors locally, regionally and internationally.
