Jenelle Rhymer

During this year, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College is featuring profiles of past students as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations.

After completing secondary school in 1996, Janelle Rhymer immediately enrolled at HLSCC and started the Hotel and Restaurant Management Associate Degree programme. However, upon discovering a love for teaching during a stint as Teacher Trainee at the Isabella Morris Primary School in 1999-2000, she has never looked back.

In 2000, Janelle switched programmes to pursue the Associate Degree in Arts, Teacher Education Concentration. After graduating from the College in 2003, she entered the workforce as Class III Teacher at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School, until she began pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education at the University of the Virgin Islands on St. Thomas in 2007. While at UVI, she made the Dean’s List and was a member of the Golden Key Honour Society.

Since returning from studies at UVI in 2009, Ms. Rhymer has been serving as Class V Teacher at the Ivan Dawson Primary School.

Thoughts about the College, its role, mission, programmes and future

The college’s role is to ensure that Virgin Islands residents continue to benefit from Tertiary Education, in order to raise the level of intellectual development in the territory thus ensuring that British Virgin Islanders have the opportunity for self growth. The college has continued on its tenure of introducing and implementing new programs and courses that would advance job careers, create positive role models and generally fulfill its role as a catalyst for nation building.

Thoughts about time spent at HLSCC, education received and impact on your life

The time I spent at HLSCC has not only contributed significantly in laying the foundation for my academic and personal success, but it also has given me the opportunity to develop leadership skills, self confidence and independence.

The experience at the College motivated me to embark on furthering my education abroad and the lessons learnt along the way are being passed on to the students whom I seek to impart knowledge as part of my career as a teacher. I salute the efforts of the College, as it continues to offer high quality education to the people of the British Virgin Islands. I am proud to be a graduate of HLSCC.
