DECEMBER 13—After both teams blew several first half chances, the Wolues picked up three second half goals to beat Old Madrid, 3-0, while Henroy Mitchell had a hat trick in leading Islanders past the Panthers, 5-0, on Sunday night in BVI Football Association National League play at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.
Fed from James Shearman’s pass just inside the 18 yards box, John Evans connected with the Wolues’ first goal six minutes into the second half, as he blasted a right bother past Old Madrid’s diving goalie Dowling “Creave” Daley, for a 1-0 lead.
Wolues striker Mark Savage who failed to convert earlier tries, beat three defenders and lobbed the ball to the left of Old Madrid’s charging goalie Daley, for a 2-0 lead in the 70 minute. Some 10 minutes later, on a play identical to his first goal, Savage again improved the score to 3-0, when he lopped a legger over Daley’s head for the score.
“We didn’t move the ball as quickly and raised the tempo as we would have liked to, but we did enough to get the three points and that was the main thing really,” Wolues’ Sherman.
Old Madrid’s player-manager Dion “Ragga” Clarke—coming off a 2-0 Wednesday night loss to Virgin Gorda United— said they played a team that was much younger and fitter.
“They moved the ball faster than us,” he noted. “We also contributed by making some poor decisions in our passes”.
In the other game, six minutes after Francis Primo gave unbeaten Islanders a 1-0 edge, Mitchell began his hat-trick when the Panthers’ defense collapsed inside the 18-yards box, much to the disappointment of their frustrated goalie.
Mitchel made it 3-0 in the 28th minute, a lead Islanders preserved into halftime, before building on it in the second half of the 5-0 triumph. Mitchell completed his hat trick in the 65th stanza, with Odaine Johnson rounding out the scoring five minutes later.
Organizers have rescheduled Wednesday’s Lucian Stars vs One Love match for the holidays break, with play resuming on January 14.
