External works on the New Peebles Hospital has commenced recently following Government’s signing of a $4.174 million contract with James Todman Construction Company Limited.
Premier and Minister of Finance Ralph O’Neal said he is pleased the project can finally move forward so that the people of the Virgin Islands and visitors benefit from an exceptional facility.
“We have had hiccups and challenges, in fact a journey of trials, but we have remained committed and will continue to forge ahead with this undertaking to ensure that a quality healthcare facility is achieved and presented to the people of this Territory,” O’Neal said.
He added: “We want to ensure patient satisfaction.”
Financial Secretary Neil Smith said “now that external works have resumed I am looking forward to the expeditious and efficient execution of the works prescribed in the contract.”
On May 12 Premier O’Neal signed the contract with James Todman of James Todman Construction Company Limited to carry out works to erect canopies at the main entrance, pave the yard, construct retaining walls and stairs, repair pipes and replace basement windows, among other things.
Following the contract signing, the financial secretary presented Todman with a cheque for $417,444, as a mobilisation fee, which is 10 percent of the contract.
The project is scheduled to be completed by February 2012.
The contract sum forms part of the $45 million loan the government borrowed from Banco Popular de Puerto Rico in 2009 to supplement the financing for the new hospital.

It’s very scary what’s going on with the London riots but the harsh truth is we could well look back on these times with some nostalgia as things get worse. Right now it seems to be just kids out there ‘protesting’ but as the political and police responses become increasingly overbearing and hysterical – special powers aren’t needed, just maintain the already present laws – you’ll soon have Mr & Mrs Middle Class out there in the streets looting and burning. Who will the authorities have to blame? Nobody but themselves.
yall just hurry it up long over due.
What an absolute joke….what is this Government doing? the whole internal space is a complete empty shell – finishes, ceilings, walls, services, medical gases, equipment, pendants, lighting, power, sanitary ware…etc – what on earth is going on? Why are the people of Tortola paying $4m dollars for something that should only cost a few thousand? it’s the internal work that needs to be done first! the externals aren’t a priority and are largely complete – this just proves again how inept and incompetent this government is – they just haven’t a clue!
@sam the man,
absolute joke it is, “repair of pipes” in new building???, kick backs, kick backs, kick backs!!!!!
It is an election year, and political campaign costs money. Some are hungry for bread, and few for power. May few choke……….
what about internal work, is it not part of the contract?
