$15M approved this month to assist residents rebuild

One of the houses damaged by Hurricane Irma.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr D Orlando Smith has approved $15 million so far this year to assist residents whose homes were wrecked during the September 2017 hurricanes.

While acknowledging that some of those residents are still living in shelters, Premier Smith said the funds he approved already have been ‘put to use’.

“With this assistance, we hope to get persons back in their homes and also support them in rebuilding their lives,” Premier Smith said.

It is not clear how many residents are still being housed in shelters such as the Multi-purpose Sports Complex in Road Town.

Insured residents also being represented

While speaking at a press conference last week, the Premier said he is also holding continued talks with banks and insurers “to support the recovery efforts by quickly releasing funds to clients.”

Last week, government implemented an Insurance Tribunal to investigate reports of unfairness by local insurers.

The Tribunal will mediate between insurers and insured residents with the aim of ‘enabling an amicable settlement’ between both parties.

The body will remain active until it fulfils its mandate to fast-track settlements.
