$20K earmarked to create VI Heritage Centre

Creating a Virgin Islands Heritage Resource Centre at the H Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) is still in the pipeline and $20,000 has been earmarked for the project.

Stakeholders raised the funds through campaigns such as an anniversary gala at the Moorings Mariner Inn last April.

President of the Lions Club Carvin Malone told BVI News on Monday (May 21) that the project was stalled because of the 2017 hurricanes.

The new centre, which is a partnership initiative between the Lions Club and HLSCC, is expected to play a vital role in the preservation and documentation of the territory’s culture.

“Since the advent of the hurricane, the buildings that we were going to refurbish and expanded were damaged substantially. So, we were not able to proceed any further,” Malone said.

According to Malone, stakeholders must now decide on another location for the much-needed centre.

“The college had some other areas of concern and damage that they are assessing, so we have to relook in terms of where exactly the centre would be and what would be the immediate request for the Virgin Islands Studies Unit [which the centre will fall under],” he added.

The Club first announced the undertaking last year. The Lions Club said the new centre would represent their most rewarding and ambitious public/private venture.

Great! I would welcome this new initiative with open arms. And while I am at it, I must mention what a terrible loss it is for this Territory that we do not have a centrally located Public Library where we can sit and in quiet surroundings, read to our hearts’ content.

I truly understand the library having to take second place after the hurricanes of 2017 made it necessary to find a place where our children could continue their education. Yes, that was a priority, but we should never have had such a long break without a library. What is being done about it? And when can we expect to have the Road Town Public Library back? Inquiring minds want to know.

See why I have harped on about updating our Planning Laws to allow for financial concessions funded by large scale developments to allow the needs of the community to be addressed. Section 106 in the UK is a good model which we could tailor to suit us. There is no reason why a main Public library has been absent for so damn long – it’s baffling!

All the developments going on with all kinds of government incentives, tax breaks etc. and the communities still don’t benefit. Such a shame these PIRATES we call ‘Honorable’ have no moral compasses and no business acumen whatsoever!! The stench of their lack of vision and failures is over-bearing now.
