Cabinet approved a total of 287 work permit exemptions on Tuesday, August 29.
According to a notice published in the latest edition of the Virgin Islands Gazette, majority of the persons (169 or nearly 60 percent) were ‘definitely exempted from obtaining a work permit on the basis of having resided in the territory for 20 years or more’.
Meanwhile, 77 people received indefinite work permit exemptions on the basis of marriage.
A total of 36 exemptions were approved ‘on the basis of school enrollment’.
The remaining five persons received indefinite work permit exemptions on the basis of what the government said is Cabinet’s discretion. The recipients are: Stephen Andrew Cooper, Patricia Sonia Desuza, Nicolee Kishan Knight-Tyson, Alaa Kosmas, and Dennis Spencer. No explanation has been given for the discretionary exemptions.
