Governor Augustus Jaspert has announced that 56 people checked into nine emergency shelters across the British Virgin Islands (BVI) up to nightfall on Tuesday, September 5.

He added that there is still space to accommodate more persons as the approaching category 5 hurricane, Irma, prompted the declaration of a flash flood watch for the BVI.

“Nine emergency shelters were opened today (Tuesday) to provide safe refuge for individuals in need of temporary accommodation. Currently, 56 individuals have checked into these facilities. There is still space available, but persons must make that decision immediately as it will soon not be safe to go out. Emergency responders will not be able to reach you during the hurricane impact, as it may not be safe for them to do so,” Governor Jaspert said.

The government earlier announced that some of the shelters are the Methodist Church at North Sound on Virgin Gorda, St Ursula’s Catholic Community Centre at The Valley on Virgin Gorda, and Claudia Creque Educational Centre on Anegada.

Some of the shelters on Tortola are the East End/Long Look Community Centre, West End Community Centre, St Georges Anglican Church in Road Town, and New Testament Church of God at Baugher’s Bay.
