Six of the 143 inmates who escaped from Her Majesty’s Prison following damaged to the facility by Hurricane Irma are still on the run.

Minister with responsibility for prison, Myron Walwyn disclosed the numbers during a press briefing this morning where he made an appeal for them to turn themselves in.

“As you know, we had a breach of the compound; significant damage to the property and 143 prisoners found themselves outside the walls of the institution.”

“All have returned except for six. The six that are outstanding are low-risk prisoners and I take this opportunity again to ask them to turn themselves in,” said Walwyn.

The Minister noted that while there were reports of some of the escapees using the opportunity to do wrong, he was thankful to the ones who have been helpful.

“I am aware that there are some prisoners who were involved in antisocial behaviours during the aftermath of Hurricane Irma; but I am also aware that there were some prisoners who were extremely helpful, who are out in the community doing well”

“As hard as this may sound I want to really thank those prisoners very much who went out into the communities and made a contribution,” said Walwyn.
