7 witnesses – Grandma allegedly assaults teacher

The grandmother of a student attending Claudia Creque Educational Centre has been called before the Magistrate’s Court on Tortola based on allegations that she assaulted a teacher at the Anegada-based educational institution.

The Anegada resident, Laura Vanterpool, pleaded not guilty to the charge when she appeared before Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards last Friday.

The prosecution has alleged that, on January 21 last year, the teacher, Candia McFarlene, was in a meeting with the school principal and two other persons when Vanterpool started to bang on the door.

The teacher opened the door and Vanterpool stormed inside while allegedly pushing the said educator and saying “move”.

The teacher went beside her chair and, while she was sitting, Vanterpool reportedly pulled the chair away.

The teacher managed to avoid a fall.

The court further heard that the principal, a parent, and another teacher witnessed the entire incident.

They matter was reported to the Anegada police, who later met Vanterpool at her residence.

According to the prosecution, Vanterpool told law enforcers that she ‘may’ have hit the teacher who is the complainant in the case.

Vanterpool was charged.

The prosecution, in the meantime, told the court that it will call seven witnesses to testify against the accused senior citizen.

Vanterpool, who is being represented by attorney-at-law Stephen Daniels, is to return to court on July 7.
