Anegada ranked among top 18 islands to visit this year

Regional online magazine the Caribbean Journal has ranked Anegada as one of the top 18 best islands to visit in the Caribbean this year.

In the report published recently, the Journal highlighted Anegada’s recovery progress since hurricanes Irma and Maria smashed into the territory last September.

“The lobster-and-beach-filled paradise of Anegada is ready to welcome you; led by the imminent reopening of its Anegada Beach Club hotel — one of the region’s coolest places to stay.”

“We’ve long said that the best way to help the Caribbean in the wake of last year’s storms is to visit the Caribbean, and that’s particularly true in the British Virgin Islands, which has been making an inspiring recovery from Hurricane Irma,” the Caribbean Journal said.

In an invited comment, Tourism Director Sharon Flax-Brutus described the report as a ‘tremendous’ recognition of the sister island.

She said the Tourist Board began heavily promoting the island when they started the Anegada Lobster Fest some five years ago. She further said the Tourist Board heightened those efforts after the 2017 disasters.

“As the island which was least affected by the storms, we launched a new campaign ‘I Love Anegada’ in January to increase awareness and to encourage more visitors to include Anegada as an option when they visit the BVI or simply as an option in the smaller islands.”

But, prior to the Tourist Board’s ‘I Love Anegada’ effort, the island had begun ‘garnering quite a bit of exposure and inclusion’ in many of the top travel lists, Flax Brutus said.

“The visit by former President Obama in January 2017 really brought more attention to the island and reinforced our message about the island,” she noted.

The Caribbean Journal did not say whether the 18 top islands were ranked in any specific order, but Anegada was listed at number three.

Notably, The Bahamas was the only territory to have more than one of its islands make the list. Four Bahamian islands were listed.

Below are the Caribbean Journal’s 18 picks for the top Caribbean islands to visit this year:

Cat Island (The Bahamas)

People been sleeping on Anegada. It sure is a beautiful, untouched island, and he people are really nice. Had the pleasure of staying at Anegada Beach Club in one of their beachfront Luxury Tents which made the experience even more memorable. To top the trip, we did an excursion with Kelly who was very pleasant and knowledgeable. He took us snorkeling, we also visited the flamingo’s and Conch shell hell. Bare in Mind that I AM A LOCAL, I LIVE ON TORTOLA. I must say Kelly treated us Good. We’re definitely going back, this time with more friends, and family! Anegada for the Win!
